Bring on Springtime and the school holidays!!

When the sun was shining a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the bees in my garden were suddenly very busy – promising warmer, sunnier weather ahead. Springtime means lots of new beginnings with plants, flowers, birds and other insects and animals. There’s a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air. The promise of so much that’s new.

The school holidays provide wonderful opportunities to get out and about to explore and discover new things. Try following your nose to discover the source of numerous and very different scents. Which is your favourite perfumed plant?

I thought I’d pull together some springtime holiday activities for the young and not so young to do:

  1. Pick some colourful flowers and unusual leaves and place them between sheets of paper towelling or blotter paper and press beneath something heavy. Wait for 2-3 weeks to dry. Lift the dried flowers gently with tweezers and create your own beautiful and unique design on to thick paper or card. Complete your creation with appropriate drawings or writing. Here are a few examples that I’ve found online:

      2. print flowers with colourful acrylic paint.

    3. Springtime is also a time to get outside and see the huge variety of birds that we are               so fortunate to have all around us. A colourful bird feeder made from icy pole                           (popsicle) sticks can attract them to your home and provide many hours of delight:

You will need:

Popsicle sticks (approx. 36)

Acrylic paint in assorted colours

String

Craft Glue or Hot Glue Gun

Bird Seed.
