Semester I: Careers News

It has been a busy semester in the careers department at South Oakleigh College!  Despite the lockdown in Term 2, we have been fortunate enough to attend several different career-related incursions and excursions throughout the semester.  Earlier in the term, some Year 10–12 students had the opportunity to visit the career expo and industry day hosted by BGKLLEN (Bayside Glen Eira Kingston Local Learning and Employment Network) where they were able to interact and network with local TAFEs, apprenticeship and traineeship providers and employers.  This was an expo centred more around vocational education and pathways and had some great hands-on activities and information for the students.  A big congratulations to Luke Marlow who filled out the stallholder question task and won the draw prize at the end of the expo!

During the remote learning period throughout Melbourne’s lockdown in Term 2, the Year 10 students participated in a Virtual Careers Day.  This day revolved around career planning and subject selection preparation.  Students also had the opportunity to explore a new career education platform, FutureAmp.  This platform is designed to help students discover interests, build real world skills, and connect with industry leaders and mentors to help them plan for their future. Students can collect and earn different learning- and employability-skills badges throughout the platform and it is a useful tool for students interested in developing their employability skills and diving deeper into industries and specific jobs that are of interest to them. The platform also features an informative STEM Careers portal that the Girls in STEM club will explore in Semester 2.

Finally, in the last week of Term 2, several Year 10 students participated in the hospitality and employability skills program run by Job Camp at the school.  Students spent two days completing a Food Safe Handler certification, learning about interview and employability skills, and completing an introduction to non-alcoholic beverages and espresso machine training.  Students spent the first day learning how to make different non-alcoholic beverages - including inventing their own drink creation - and in the afternoon they explored the many different styles of coffee using an espresso machine.   It was a busy two days, but students should feel more confident and prepared in their search for part time work over the coming years.

We have a busy start to Term 3 with subject selection and course confirmation for our Year 9-10 students and the VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) application portal opening for our Year 12s.  There are a few industry immersion days and career expos coming up in Semester 2 as well; please refer to Compass for further details!
