Junior School Sports Summary
YEAR 7 & 8 BADMINTON
Miss Tilby and Miss Wallis want to congratulate all the Year 7 and Year 8 teams who took part in the Interschool Badminton. We had many hard-fought games and skilful shots, along with a lot of fun.
Our Year 7 Boys A Team were undefeated, playing exceptional Badminton. They are now through to the next round. A fantastic effort, Jason Choi, Roger Sam, Yarden Grushka, Siddharth Vindo!
Our Year 7 Girls A Team ended up at the top of their section and went on to play Brentwood in the Grand Final but did not quite manage to win enough games in the end. Vanessa Sadjoli, Serina Farajichalehzamini, Miu Morita, Chantelle Cardenas: congratulations on reaching the Grand Final.
The Year 8 Boys Team also played in the Grand Final but were again beaten by Brentwood: 89 to 68 points. The Year 8 Girls Team were also third overall in their section.
Congratulations to all our junior Badminton Teams! You represented the school with exceptional sportsmanship and determination.
NETBALL
The Junior Netball Girls overall had a fantastic day. Both Year 8 Girls teams played well and progressed as the games went on. The A team made the finals and came 3rd overall. The B Team played well together on the day with Kristina and Ayesha being strongest on the court. Lauren Olver and Alicia displaying great teamwork and strength in the A Team with Kristal dramatically improving and showing great defence as Goalkeeper.
The Year 7 Girls Netball team won 1, and lost 2, out of their 3 games for the day. Abigail played well as Shooter and Tal showed strength on court as did Phoebe in the Centre and Freya as Goalkeeper.
SOCCER
The Junior Boys and Girls teams went to Monash to compete in the interschool sports competition. The Junior girls, made of Year 7s (mainly), competed in the Year 8 competition and did exceptionally well. They improved with each game they played and managed to win a game against another team of Year 8s. The girls should be proud of their efforts playing in the Grand Final.
The Year 7 boys had an outstanding day, winning the Grand Final. After winning two games in the group stages, the boys went on to win the final, outplaying the opposition. The Year 7 boys will now advance to the regional tournament. ‘Good luck’ to them in their next competition!
The Year 8 boys lost their first game 3-0 to Brentwood SC, with all goals scored in the first half. After this they dominated play in the second half, becoming more confident on the ball and with each other’s game. In the second game the team came up against Wellington. Playing a more attacking formation they won 3-0. The final group stage game was against Brentwood SC seconds. This was a tense, defensive affair, with a total of 3 penalties awarded during the game. Heading into the last minute, scores were tied at 1-1. Christos Tsoukalas made a run into the box only to be brought down and awarded a penalty. Adding to the drama, the final siren went, and Christos calmly slotted the penalty home, and propelled South Oakleigh into the Grand Final against Brentwood. In the final game Brentwood would go away eventual winners: 2-1.
AFL
A sunny June day presented fantastic conditions for our Junior Interschool AFL Competition. With strong numbers, we were able to enter a Year 7 and Year 8 into this competition. This was made possible through the enthusiasm of several students with limited experience keen to have a game. The lack of experience meant we were not competitive on the scoreboard; however, the boys showed significant effort and determination and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
