Year 3 - Year 6

Assistant Principal's Report

Term 2... and that's a wrap!!!

I cannot believe that we have hit our final week of Term 2 already!!  I am extremely proud of how the Years 3-6 students have tackled the term.  Their dedication, determination and resilience has been outstanding.  You should all be so proud of how you were able to accept and adapt to our two weeks of remote learning.  It is definitely an experience we are all too familiar with and we made it through successfully.

Year 6 Teacher/Student Buddy Program…

The Student/Teacher Buddy program is a fabulous initiative here at the Springs, as it helps to develop an additional special relationship with a teacher outside of the class.  Having an additional staff member to go to if our students have any concerns will hopefully help them feel a connection with our school as they know that there is always someone here who cares and who is ready to listen.

As part of the program each term we hold a buddy breakfast, which invites Year 6 Students and their Buddy Teacher to enjoy a delicious breakfast together.  This term was bacon and egg sandwiches.  It was wonderful to see teachers and students enjoying their breakfast and chatting about their successes for the term.

Learning Focus for the Fortnight…

The writing focus throughout the second half of the term has been on Procedure text types.  Procedural texts instruct your audience on how to complete a specific task.  Generally, this then falls into two categories, how to make something and how to do something.  The purpose of a procedural text is to provide sequenced information or directions so that people can successfully perform activities in safe, efficient and appropriate ways.

Our Years 3-6 students have worked extremely hard to create high-quality writing pieces, which they had lots of fun drafting, revising and publishing.  The creativity of our students is to be commended.

The Mathematics focus for Middle School has been on division and how to solve division equations by using mental and written strategies.  Students were exposed to various strategies (doubling, halving, written algorithms, arrays, repeated addition, etc.) that they could use to guide them in correctly calculating a division problem.

In Year 5, students have looked into place value, decimals and integers.  Students learnt about positive and negative numbers and how to locate them on a number line. They were also taught how to add and subtract integers.

The Year 6 students have continued to learn about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. They have worked hard to master their skills in being able to make connections between the three.  Lessons also looked into teaching students how to calculate percentage discounts.

I would like to wish everyone a wonderful winter break.  I hope that you are able to spend the next few weeks relaxing and enjoying some quality time as a family.  Term 3 will begin on Monday the 12th of July.  I am looking forward to seeing you all for an exciting term ahead!
