Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

The first week of sport at the College is always hectic but never before have we had AIC Round 1 at the end of Week 1 which made for a few frantic days. Thankfully the support of our students, parents, coaches and coordinators made for an enjoyable weekend.

On Friday night we hosted Gregory Terrace and Ambrose Tracey College in a swim meet. It was pleasing to witness the team spirit already on display amongst our College Swim Squad. Mr James Boyce, Mr Damian Bromley and Mrs Cath Geraghty have already inculcated a sense of team spirit in a sport that is generally perceived as individual.

Friday also saw our 1st XIII AFL team take on the might of St Laurence’s. Coach Mr Darian Johns said “the boys fought hard, but SLC had a few very classy players” going down 11 goals to 4, “which was much better than the 100 points we went down by last year”. Across the age groups, our AFL teams had a tough weekend but the Eagles are on the improve and are developing under the guidance and direction of coordinator Mr Brett Gillett.

Saturday was a day of huge success for our Volleyball and Cricket teams, particularly with our aggregate results. The 1st VI Volleyball won in a 5-set nail biter, 17 – 15 in the 5th. Whilst our 1st XI Cricket posted 240 runs proving too difficult for Laurie’s to chase down.

Many teams this week will have an internal game, which is, unfortunately, the nature of our round when we play St Edmund's College. Please ensure you continue to play every game in the right spirit to certify our Marist charism amongst the community. We wish every team success this weekend as we continue to strive to be our best in everything we do.

Please note – unfortunately due to the COVID safe plan at Ipswich Girls Grammar School, no spectators will be allowed to watch the Volleyball this Saturday for all games played at this venue. I appreciate this is very disappointing for parents but regrettably our hands are tied due to AIC and AHPPC guidelines.

As you may notice from the structure of this newsletter, the Buzz will no longer be published, rather an integrated newsletter across all College areas will be circulated on the Tuesday of each week. This newsletter will consist of any highlights, achievements and photos from the weekend. No draws for weekend fixtures will be published in the newsletter. They will now ONLY be published on the College App. Therefore, ALL results, weekend draws, update information, game summaries and images must be obtained through the College App. Please ensure you have downloaded the College App to guarantee the most up to date information pertaining to all College sport.
