Year 12 PE

On Monday 25th June our Year 12 PE class had a special incursion in the class room. We were visited by Luke McIlroy who came to demonstrate a VO2 max fitness test and a Windgate bike test.

Luke is a sport scientist who runs a sports performance consulting business in Melbourne.  In 2018, he started visiting VCE classes to demonstrate fitness testing that would normally have to be conducted in a laboratory environment.

It was an excellent opportunity for the girls to gauge their fitness levels and the incursion supported the outcomes being taught at the end of Unit 3 and beginning of Unit 4.

The volunteers who participated in the fitness test were Sarah Bohn and Tia Brereton. Thanks girls for your efforts on the day.

Year 11 P.A.R.T.Y Program Excursion

On Tuesday the 24th of July, Year 11 students from Mooroopna Secondary College, McGuire College and Shepparton High School attended the P.A.R.T.Y program (Preventing Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth). Nurses from both the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and Goulbourn Valley Health educated the students on physical trauma and the effects it has on not only the individual involved but also the support network around the individual.

The students participated in multiple workshops throughout the day. Two Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses from the Alfred Hospital ran the first workshop, showing the students an array of instruments that they use daily when caring for trauma patients. The following workshops included a visual of what life in ICU would be like and what a patient would endure when going through rehabilitation from a trauma accident.

The students were also fortunate enough to speak to working paramedics. One was a local from Murchison and the other works closely with the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. They taught the students how to deescalate a situation, contact 000, perform CPR and the importance of the chain of survival.

Throughout the day students were told many different personal anecdotes from nurses within the Alfred Hospital, at GV Health and people who have suffered trauma incidents themselves. A highlight of the day was a story from a young man named Jacob. Nine years ago, Jacob was in a severe car accident, resulting in a 5% chance of survival. To the doctors and nurses surprise, Jacob was out of hospital within two weeks. Within 8 months he was back to a relatively normal life, although he has had many ongoing surgeries and issues, with some of them being quite major. Despite the setbacks, Jacob has maintained a positive outlook on life and is continuing to share his story, hoping to educate and inform many young people of the impact that their decisions can have.

Overall, the day was fantastic opportunity for all the students and feedback was great. It was an amazing, eye opening experience for all involved. Students were forced to reflect on personal decisions they have made and the reality of the decisions, and the harsh consequences that could accompany them.
