Year 8 Year Adviser
Rhys Murphy
The first semester of 2019 has been an incredibly busy one for Year 8. Students have been working away on a large variety of different tasks and assessments for their various subjects. They have been building some high powered bottle rockets in TAS, exploring the many ways in which water not only impacts our lives but is vital to our society in Geography, explored emotional stories of the Holocaust in ‘Hannah’s Suitcase’ and the wacky world of Tim Burton in English and many, many more things across all of the key learning areas.
Outside of the classroom we have seen students participate vigorously in both the girls group and boys group with extremely positive results, compete skilfully in the swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals, demonstrate their abilities as current and future leaders in the student leadership team and win a large amount of awards at our term one merit assembly.
2019 has started extremely positively for Year 8, with a continued positive attitude it is shaping up to continue to be a productive and fruitful year for all members of the cohort.

There are exciting times ahead for Year 10. The academic and practical expectations of our studies have increased and they have been settling in well to their studies in terms one and two. There is an air of maturity and community among the classes, where everyone is supporting each other. It is important, as exams are approaching, that students increase their focus in their studies. Miss Shah and I have been in discussions for study sessions and seminars to focus and assist our year group.
During one of our year meetings, we engaged in great team building activities, as well as getting to know the new faces that have joined our group. Thank you Miss Kavanagh, for organising and leading the activities in such an impromptu setting.
As part of our studies this year, we went on the excursion to the Jewish Museum to learn about the Holocaust for the HSIE Assessment Task. This was an excellent opportunity to engage with primary sources and hear stories from real-life survivors from the Holocaust. This experience helped consolidate the knowledge being learned in class. Our year represented our school with pride, and I have a few ideas for future excursions.
As a year group we applied the practical skills in organising and running our first fundraiser, to raise money for the end of year celebration. We came together and fed many hungry staff and students and raised over $300 for the end of year event.
Good luck to Year 10 this year. I know we can smash it through exams in week 6 and will be participating in work experience in week 9.

Our Year 12 students started the year refreshed and enthusiastic. They certainly looked great from day one in their Year 12 Jackets which they had collaboratively designed.
Their first day this year was spent participating in study skills workshops and they began setting academic goals for the rest of the year. The beginning of Term 2 marks the half-way point of the last year of high school for the class of 2019. Our students have been proactive in taking the opportunity to book career counselling sessions with our careers adviser, Ms Jansen. These sessions are designed to explore post-school options and to provide students with the confidence to pursue their goals and maximise future prospects. There are planned excursions to Careers Expos and University information days to provide students with all the available information which will positively enhance their post-school planning and decision making.
Students are encouraged to adopt a regular home study routine consisting of both, subject content revision and examination style question practise early on this term, to thoroughly prepare for the Trial Higher School Examinations taking place in week 4 of Term 3. Thorough preparation in the lead up to examinations ensures that our students minimise stress and anxiety levels and therefore achieve much better outcomes as a result.
A large group of the cohort have HSC Major Works due early on next term. It is of utmost importance that they cease the opportunities provided to them by teachers and make full use of their Fridays to complete projects, assessment tasks and engage in quality study.
Preparations are underway for our Year 12 Formal which is taking place on September 24, 2019 at Lily’s function centre in Seven Hills. More information will be heading out soon. Our students have been proudly working hard during fundraising events such the state and federal election sausage sizzles to raise funds for the event. Well done Year 12!
