Careers

Greetings!

Term two has arrived and there is already so much going on it is amazing. For students at all levels there seems to be something coming across my desk related to careers, study habits, 21st Century Skills and work experience opportunities.

Year 12

For the year 12s every day and every ounce of effort is so important now. Focusing in on using your time wisely and efficiently will give you the best chance to achieve your personal best.

There are any number of online sites that provide study support, skills and advice for VCE students but one of my favourites is The Art of Smart found at Art of Smart https://www.artofsmart.com.au/ This SA based site is free and produces weekly videos about study skills, work life balance and encouragement to stay motivated to achieve your goals.

While we are on study skill, there are a few study sessions coming up in the next school holidays that students are strongly encouraged to attend. Of interest are the free sessions being held at ACU in Ballarat. The sessions cover English, Further Maths and Maths Methods. The university was in contact late last term and has indicated that if ten or so students indicate their interest to attend, they will provide a free bus to get you there. Please let me know if you would like to take up this generous offer as soon as possible. Further information about the sessions can be found at https://www.acu.edu.au/about-acu/community-engagement/widening-participation/year-12-workshops

Year 11

Final arrangements are coming together for the year 11 Tertiary Institutions excursion on the 15th-17th of May. Around forty students will visit institutions in Geelong, Melbourne and Ballarat. Last year participating students reported the trip as being valuable, informative and a fun time being away together and traveling about.

Year 10

Students have a few more weeks to arrange their work experience for the last two weeks of June. Last year we had a 97% participation rate and several students were offered part time work, work placements and even full-time apprenticeships. Like anything, the more effort you put in to finding a placement that provides you with an insight into an area of interest, the more you will be rewarded and inspired.

Year 9

There is a busy time planned for the end of term 2 during the annual Year 9 Careers Focus Week. Students will travel to the Career Expo in Horsham, to SW TAFE and Deakin University in Warrnambool as well as completing their Morrisby Report. This valuable exercise is completely funded by the Victorian Government for the first time this year and will be followed up in term 3 with a one-on-one career planning interview. More information about this can be found at http://www.ceav.vic.edu.au/career-planning-service-for-all-year-9-students/

Year 7 & 8

Industry speakers are being arranged for the year 7s & 8s to introduce them to the world of work and training to inspire them to think big about their exciting futures.

Listed below are several links to opportunities and information to provide students with even more ideas and motivation to ensure every day at school contributes positively to great future outcomes.

  • There are lots of employment opportunities in the rail industry, and they’re not all about driving trains. If you are considering a pathway to engineering, infrastructure, IT, maintenance, operations, etc., why not look for opportunities in Rail Careers?
