Student Attitudes to School Survey 2019
Each year students in grades 4 to 6 complete a Department of Education survey called the Student Attitudes to School Survey (SATS). This tool is designed to gather their feedback in five domains; Effective teaching practice for cognitive engagement, Teacher-student relations, Learner characteristics, Social engagement and Student safety. Rangeview had 205 students complete the survey this year.
As with previous years Rangeview had strong positive results across the board with the students in levels 4 – 6 responding positively to questions in most domains. Our strongest result was in the teacher – student relations domain with 96% of students reporting that teachers at Rangeview have high expectations for success. Also very strong was the social engagement domain with 91% of students reporting a sense of inclusion within the school. There were many other areas of strength including those where we have improved from last year’s results;
- Differentiated learning challenge
- Classroom behaviour
- High expectations for success
- Teacher concern
- Learning confidence
- School connectedness
- Sense of inclusion
- Having an advocate at school
- Managing bullying
An area for improvement was student voice and agency with only 60% of students overall responding positively to this domain. The questions in this domain were around students having a say in the things they learn, the students deciding things like class activities or rules, and the children being encouraged to share their ideas in the classroom. The girls responded significantly differently to the boys for these questions – with the boys being less positive about their voice and agency. This difference increased with age.
We have begun discussions in teams around these results and are looking at ways to continuously improve in both areas of little growth from 2018 and areas needing improvement overall. We will have a focus on increasing out student voice and agency into the next 12 months and will also look at some targeted programs for our boys.
