Junior School News

From the Head of Junior School

Last Wednesday we were blessed with excellent weather for the running of the 2019 Junior School House Athletics Carnival. This year saw the return of the Jenkin Juggernaut! Jenkin House led the points from early on in the day and it was left to the other Houses to try and keep up. Jones came close to taking the lead at one stage but the relays saw Jenkin power ahead to maintain their lead until the end. Congratulations to Jenkin who took the double by winning the Senior School Athletics Carnival the next day. All of the Houses performed admirably in the Spirit Cup with Riley House taking the honours this year. Congratulations to all of the students who competed and supported their respective Houses on the day.

Term Two Uniform and Junior School Photos

As it is often still quite warm at the commencement of the Term students are permitted to wear either Summer or Full winter uniform for the first 3 weeks, after which time, full winter uniform must be worn. The exceptions this are Wednesday May 1 and Thursday May 2 which are Junior School Photo days and the Foundation Service which is on the evening of May 10. On each of these occasions, our students must be in the Full Winter School Uniform.

Athletics Carnival

Wednesday 27th March saw the annual Junior School Athletics Carnival at Flora Hill.  The students has a great day participating in all events from Discus to High Jump and 100m to 800m races.  With the focus being on participation for their House, students compete in all field events and track events.  This year the Hurdles was also reintroduced for those that wished to compete in this event. Thank you to the Year Nine students who kept all the groups moving throughout the day and on task to complete all their events on time.   The day always brings out the best in our students, cheering on their friends and fellow House mates.   Thank you to Mrs Hamilton, Mr Doherty and Mr Robertson for their hardwork ensuring our day runs smoothly.

Congratulations to Jenkin House for taking out the House Cup and Riley House for taking out the Spirit Cup.

Congratulations to our Age Champions who excelled in their events across the day:

Relay for Life

On Saturday 30th March Girton Grammar School participated in the Relay for Life event at Backhaus Oval, Fir Street, Golden Square.

Our team this year consisted of 14 team members.  Girton Grammar students, parents, grandparents, past students and friends all enjoyed the day and contributed to this worthy cause.

Relay for Life is a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them.  Relay also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer.

I was very proud of all our team members this year.  They showed an amazing sense of compassion and school pride as they worked together to complete as many laps of the oval as they could.  As a team we walked 144 laps on Saturday.

During the day the team members not only walked but participated in many activities that the event organisers had on offer.  Trying to complete a lap using the planked feet was a humous challenge that some of our team members took on.  Also completing laps while walking backwards.

The Girton Grammar School Team raised $407.00 this year.

Through the funds raised at Relay for Life, more than 61,000 Australian lives have been saved over the last 20 years.  Improvements in cancer prevention and screening mean that less people will hear the words, “you have cancer”.  Advances in cancer treatments allow cancer patients to spend more time with their loved ones.

Our team did a fantastic job this year and we hope to be able to continue supporting causes like this in the future.
