State-wide 6-7 Transition Day

On Tuesday this week the Secondary Campus welcomed our new Year 7 Cohort for 2022. As well as our continuing students we are welcoming new students to our college from several different local primary schools, some even joining us from interstate. It was fantastic to see all of our new Year 7’s mingling and getting to know one another.

Our new Year 7’s got to experience a little of what Year 7 at The Lakes has to offer, they played games of European Handball in P.E., tested their musical abilities and worked together to build rhythms, experimented with model helicopters in Science, programmed robots using their iPads in Digi-Tech and expressed their creativity in Art.

It was a great opportunity for our new students to ask questions of their teachers, get to know our secondary campus, and most importantly start to build new relationships with their future classmates.

Our future Year 7’s will have another opportunity to ask any new questions and meet their peers when they meet their homegroup teachers online next week.

As was said at the conclusion of our Transition Day, we hope all current Year 6’s enjoy their last few days of primary school. It is an important time in their lives that they will never get again. So, enjoy your graduations, enjoy your end of year activities, and enjoy a relaxing summer holiday.

The secondary teachers are very much looking forward to working with our new Year 7’s. We hope you all come back relaxed, recharged, and ready for a big year of learning at The Lakes.

Below is a description and some examples of the amazing artwork our new Year 7’s completed.

In the Art room with Shannon, students discussed what ‘transition’ means and how they can prepare themselves for a positive experience in high school. We looked at artist Tesha Moore and used her colourful style to design our own Aim High Hot Air Balloon. The task was for students to include an affirmation or inspiring quote, as a symbol for what they will aim for in year 7! The students loved the task and many volunteered to use extra time to work on these to resolve their artwork before the end of the day, which demonstrated intrinsic motivation, a great work ethic, as well as creative flair!
