Breaksea House News

This term has been full of exciting adventures with the Breaksea girls, with Year Twelve finishing, Outdoor Education camps, Work Experience, puppies, sports carnivals, Leadership announcements, BBQs and a new student.

Welcome

Firstly, we would like to welcome Paige Narkle, who joined Breaksea House at the beginning of this term. Paige is in Year Eleven and was a day student previously, she has quickly settled into the routines and activities of boarding and has enjoyed getting to know the girls more. Paige is heavily involved in basketball, playing in three teams, coaching and umpiring. We are looking forward to sharing all the fun of living in Breaksea with Paige over the next year.

Holiday Work Experience

Over the holidays, Lahnee Harries was fortunate to complete Work Experience with the Katanning Police. She was involved in many aspects of policing over the week and they even printed an article about her great influence at the station. It always makes us proud to see the positive legacy each student provides in their world.

BBQ Dinners

The girls have loved the routine change with having a BBQ dinner each Wednesday night in-house. Girls have taken turns at cooking, whilst Mrs Nicole Scott manages all the details. It provides a lovely, relaxed feel sitting around outside and on the lounges for dinner. The outdoor dinners have allowed for many more table tennis tournaments too.

Year Twelve Activities

There have been many activities at school over the last two weeks of Year Twelves time in boarding. Karis Cristinelli, Jasmine Butterworth, Abigail Winyard and Isabelle Plowman took great delight in creating costumes to wear for the water fight on their last day and they also appreciated Mr Mark Sawle taking them out for dinner at Three Anchors. This was a great recognition of all the study they have been doing in house over the last few weeks. There are a few rooms that now have a wall-paper of impressive study notes too.

2022 Leaders

The Year Eleven boarders have been super busy over the last few weeks. There have been leadership announcements and we want to congratulate Madison Smart on being Boarding Captain for 2022 and Rachel Henderson being Wilson Captain. Additionally, next week students in Breaksea will be emailed a leadership application for Breaksea leaders for 2022.

Year Eleven Events

Year Eleven also celebrated an evening of Mocktails, with the Hospitality students creating amazing Mocktails and the rest of the cohort joining for an evening of dress ups and fun. Last week, Jasmine Bradshaw, Rachel Henderson, Lahnee Reid-Harries, Kira Pearce and Elisa Crook all set off on a very long hike for Outdoor Education. They hiked 60km from Walpole to Denmark in three days and whilst I was envious of the scenery, I was not envious of the sore muscles and feet they returned with.

Sport

The summer sports season is in full swing and we have many girls enjoying basketball this year. Rhiannon Williams-Jolley tells me the new uniform for their Griffin’s team is so much better than the old one and it’s great to see girls both playing and coaching basketball. We encourage all girls to be involved in physical activity regularly and it has been good to see a number of girls regularly attend gyms in town and develop their fitness.

We also have the Years Seven to Ten sport carnival on this week.  The Years Eleven and Twelve students participated in a mini carnival in Week One.

18th Birthday

Last week we celebrated Karis’ 18th birthday. It was a fun day, with Karis returning to boarding to find her Aunty had delivered an amazing '18' cake created from cupcakes and flowers and balloons from her family. This meant when we had birthday cake for supper, there was more than enough for everyone. Welcome to adulthood Karis!

Puppy Fun

Last Saturday, Abigail organised for one of the day girls to bring her five Jack Russell puppies in for a play with the girls. Much laughter and happiness were accompanied by cuddles for the puppies.

Year Nine

Over the last few weeks, the Breaksea students have enjoyed the Year Nine Endeavour students joining us for dinner and Prep on a Thursday night. They have also had opportunities on the weekend to join with the senior students, spending time with the puppies and watching movies on a Saturday night. We will continue creating more opportunities for the Endeavour Year Nine students to join Breaksea over the next few weeks.

Tutoring

Please encourage your students to utilise the tutoring on offer within boarding as we move towards the upcoming examination period. On Monday nights we have Mrs Linda Luff with English tutoring, Tuesday and Wednesday nights Mrs Gayle Britten and Miss Alice Nixon provide Maths tutoring and I offer English and HASS support on a Thursday night. Mr Zak Mola provides Human Biology and Science tutoring on a Tuesday night. It is important that students make the most of all the academic support available to them within boarding.

We wish Madison Smart and Rachel Henderson all the best for their Leadership Camp this weekend and look forward to hearing all about it next week.

Thank you for all your support and I encourage families to drop in for a chat or cup of coffee whenever you are in town.
