Thinking Routines

Students use thinking routines from Foundation - Six. A thinking routine  is a set of questions or a brief sequence of steps used to scaffold and support student thinking. Thinking routines are  used with students to help make thinking visible. Thinking routines extend and deepen students' thinking. They can be used in all areas of the curriculum.

See Think Wonder

See, Think, Wonder

Students in 3 / 4 engaged with the thinking routine of See, Think, Wonder. This routine encourages students to make careful observations and thoughtful interpretations. It helps stimulate curiosity and interest in a particular topic.

NUMERACY NEWS - Colleen Monaghan

The junior students are currently learning about Fractions. They are inquiring into equal parts of a whole and how are fractions similar and different.  By the end of Year 1, students should be able to recognise and describe one-half as one of two equal parts of a whole. By the end of Year 2 they should be able to recognise and interpret common uses of halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections. In 1/2MD the students drew their families and recorded the boys and girls in their families as fractions. Here are some of their drawings:

The students that worked with me this week in extension maths were making various fractions and comparing them to see which was larger, which were equivalent and how we could add fractions with the same or related denominators. Here are some photos of their great work.

The prep students have been working on Multiplication. They have been making equal groups and counting to find the total of all. The students working with me represented the stories using pictures and number sentences. Here are some of the students’ work.

STEM is BACK!

Students returned to STEM with excitement and enthusiasm! The Year 1/2 students were introduced to the LEGO WeDo2.0 Kit and Program. They collaborated in pairs to explore the kit, program and build a functional electrical fan. Year 5/6 students also collaborated in pairs to construct a robotic rhino and program it to start and stop before it hits something.

Here is a video for you to view what our students of St. Fidelis are capable of.
