Science

After returning from remote learning, the science team focused heavily on providing students with authentic learning opportunities in order to engage students, connect learning to real-life situations, and make learning purposeful.

To achieve success, part of this was making it our mission to ensure that students would still be able to attend and participate in the excursions and incursions that had been planned for earlier in the year.

The following are a few key highlights of Term 4 science for our Year 7 - 9 students:

Year 7 Zoo Excursion

On Friday the 10th of December, our Year 7 science students attended an excursion to Melbourne Zoo.

Students have been studying animal classification, adaptations, and ecosystems throughout Term 4 in science, and this excursion provided students with a opportunity to make real-life connections to their learning.

All of the students who attended, represented Edgars Creek Secondary College with pride and demonstrated our values of 'embrace learning' and 'respect'. Students actively participated in the educational workshop where they discussed animal adaptations and had the opportunity to hold and analyse various animal skulls. Students also got to meet zoo local 'Jaffa' - a red Hungarian snake!

Year 8 Mission to Mars

On Wednesday the 10th and 17th of November, some select Year 8 students attended the Mission to Mars excursion at the Victorian Space Science Education Centre.

Students had the opportunity to take on the role of an astronaut, as well as be in mission control, to work as a team to survey the surface of Mars.

After collecting their samples on Mars, students then went back into the laboratory to analyse their samples and decode more information about the history of Mars.

Year 9 Forensics Incursion

On Friday November 19th, our Year 9 Forensics elective students attended a mock crime scene incursion hosted by Education Interactive.

Students had the opportunity to acts as professional forensic investigators and solve a crime based on the analysis of various pieces of evidence using forensic techniques they had been learning about in class.

It has been such a fantastic term for our science students - they demonstrated great resilience throughout remote learning and had a very positive return to on-site learning. The science team are looking forward to being back in the classroom in 2022 and continuing to develop and provide students with engaging, exciting and authentic science learning opportunities.

Enjoy the break, rest up and we look forward to seeing you all in 2022!
