Year 10 Food Technology - Morning Tea Exam

Year 10 Food Technology culminates in a production exam that requires students to make a sweet or savoury morning tea platter for staff.  Each student invites a staff member to be their client. The student consults with their client about their food preferences and any dietary requirements and then proposes four menu options to their client.

Once the menu item is selected, students research and select an appropriate recipe, cost the menu item, design how to present the platter, order the ingredients, plan how long each stage of the production will take and practise their menu item at home.

On the day of the Staff Morning Tea, there is much anticipation from both staff and students!  Ingredients are laid out, hygiene protocols strictly adhered to and every corner of the Food Technology kitchen is busy with students producing their individual, planned morning tea platter.  The recent production of a croquembouche was a definite highlight but scones, cupcakes, sliders, sausage rolls, muffins, biscuits, slices and rice paper rolls are also regular menu items.  Once the Staff Morning Tea is complete, students reflect on their production in terms of their use of time and equipment, their ability to overcome challenges and the feedback they received.  As far as exams go, the Year 10 Food Technology Morning Tea Exam appears to be one that both staff and students look forward to!

In the exam, I was happy that I was able to cook my food without encountering a problem. Despite having doubts, I managed to cook plenty of food and thankfully had all of them taken, I'm impressed with myself and was happy with the support of the staff and the good vibes.  Nicholas Plaza

"I was really impressed with the whole class as all the dishes that were produced looked really delicious. It was a really fun day and I hope others will get to experience it in the future !!"  Russell Yeo

The experience was amazing because the staff gave lots of support and positive feedback. This is definitely something an exam student should look forward to doing, as it will be the most fun exam you would have ever done.   Damien D'Cunha

The final food tech class was great, being able to pick what we could make was great and could go at our own pace but obviously do it in time too. I felt great about this because I had cooked hundreds of these types of burgers before at my part-time job and was very confident and if I did forget something or did it wrong I would be able to work around it. The staff loved my sliders, in fact, they were gone within the first 5-10 minutes and yes, I was surprised by the staff that they loved them a lot. Thank you very much for teaching me in Food Tech this year. I learnt heaps and had lots of fun.  Tige Bergman

I had a few doubts going into the exam, but in the end, I found it to be quite fun and rewarding, I was surprised by how efficiently I worked and how well the food turned out. I received lots of positive feedback from various staff and students and believe it is something that future students should look forward to.  Diogo Ferreira De Araujo

I really enjoyed the Staff Morning Tea Assignment, as it was very rewarding to make a meal for a specific client, and for them to hopefully enjoy it! We spent a lot of time preparing for the event, so it was really impressive to see everything come together on the day. I was so happy with the outcome of our dish, as it looked and tasted great, and the feedback from all of the staff was very positive. This has certainly been one of the highlights of my year and is something that others can look forward to in the future.
