Grade 4

Explore the Learning in Grade 4

Reading:

Throughout Term 2, the Year 4 students have investigated both fiction and non-fiction texts about the natural resources around Barwon Heads. They have learnt about rivers, the Bluff, mangroves and sand dunes and how authors make these information texts comprehensible and engaging.

Students have also started small group ‘Reciprocal Reading’ to improve their abilities to predict, clarify, summarise and question a text.

Writing:

Throughout Term 2 the Year 4 students have focused on 3 different writing types. They created information reports about a new addition to the animal kingdom and a new Olympic sport. They focused on including a range of information report text features such as subheadings, labelled diagrams, maps and fact files.

They also explored writing persuasively to save the Barwon Heads Community Library. They were able to create 3 arguments, use a range of persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, expert opinions and repetition to try to persuade their reader.

For the last 2 weeks of Term 2, the Year 4’s have been learning about poetry. They have spent time exploring and investigating poetic devices such as similies, hyperboles, personification, metaphors and alliteration and how they engage a reader.  We have started writing our own Acrostic Poems making sure that they tell a story.

Geelong Cats Healthy Heroes:

It was fantastic to host Geelong players Toby Conway, Kate Darby, and Gary Rohan who talked about their lives as elite athletes and discussed the significance of being healthy in everyday life. Some of the topics covered included the importance of drinking enough water, effective ways to relax, physical activity, healthy snacks, wellness, and sleep. Everyone enjoyed asking the players questions about themselves and even challenging them to a series of games. It was great fun and an awesome opportunity to see how AFL players stay fit and healthy!
