Spring Flowers by Robin Mead

This week all the students finished off the projects that they have been working on the last few weeks, mounted and ready for display. After drawing their Australian flowers with India Ink on colourful backgrounds, the Grade 3 and 4 students then painted around the negative space in silver paint. This took them a couple of weeks as they were trying very hard not to go over the flowers and to paint in a nice even coverage. Once dry they tidied up the flowers and mounted them on coloured paper which they chose specifically to match the colours in their artwork. Here are some stunning artworks from students in 3J, 3M and 3H:

Not wanting to miss out on the fun of painting flowers, Foundation students also joined in and draw some beautiful flowers. We talked about how flowers that are bigger are actually closer to the eye or in the ‘foreground’, and those that looked smaller were actually further away. They draw lots of flowers, with a focus on making them a variety of heights. Inspired by the artist Robin Mead they painted them in bright liquid water colours, and then learnt how to blend chalk pastels with their fingers in either cool or warm colours for the background. They look so bright and colourful, here some examples from FS and FH:

Finally, Grade 5 and 6 students have been studying the French Impressionists all term are excited to be heading to the The Lume in a few weeks.

They learned how the impressionists like to paint fast and loose brushstrokes, that they blended their colours on the canvas and liked to paint ‘en plein air’. Here are the students from Year 5 proudly holding their own versions of Monet’s famous Japanese Bridge.

Have a wonderful break, I hope you get outside to enjoy some real flowers and sunshine!
