GET EXCITED FOR IDAHOBIT!!

Wednesday 17th May is IDAHOBIT (or International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia)! Heathmont College will be celebrating IDAHOBIT in multiple ways through out the day. Anyone can get involved by adding a splash of rainbow to their uniform to show your support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

IDAHOBIT Day is a day for showing support of people to live safely without fear of abuse or violence based on their sex, sexuality or gender expression.

IDAHOBIT marks the anniversary of May 17 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. While we celebrate this milestone, IDAHOBIT is still important today due to stigma and discrimination that is still prevalent across the world.

In Australia; 68% of LGBTQIA+ employees are not out to everyone at work, 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth experience abuse due to their identity, and 35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months.

IDAHOBIT celebrates LGBTIQ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.  This aligns with Heathmont values, and helps the school to strengthen students' sense of safety and belonging in our school community.

At Heathmont College we will be celebrating IDAHOBIT in a variety of ways:

  • Add a splash of rainbow to your uniform.
  • Rainbow Club will have a small event such as sharing party food in their lunchtime club.
  • Canteen will provide rainbow coloured food options.
  • Pledge board provided for students to sign.
  • Use of Minus 18 merchandise such as lanyards, stickers, flags - all free.
  • Guess the flag game outside the canteen.
  • Mentor group activities.
  • Fly the Rainbow flag outside of school for the full day.
