Teaching and Learning

Lions Public Speaking Competition

Our Year 3-6 students will be participating in this event this year. Each of our students will make a speech at school to an independent selection panel  and those students with the highest score in each grade will go on to speak at the local competition in July (to be held at Dingee). The students are provided with a topic to speak about with different topics for Year 3/4 and 5/6. The students have been busy working on their prepared speeches over the last two weeks and will continue to prepare themselves in the lead up to this event. Information regarding this competition and parental permission forms have been sent home with students. The date and time of our local school competition will be announced soon.

News from Mrs Lightburn

The P-2 class have been exploring repeating patterns and stating the rule to continue. They have had some fun with threading beads, using geometric shapes and attempting to follow number patterns with skip counting.

After the trip to Edendale farm they chose their favourite activity and wrote about it with an illustration.

We are looking at how we use materials around us for a variety of things eg. houses, chairs drink bottles and why they are the best to use. We are following this up with liquids, solids and gases.

News from the Year 3-6 Room

With Mr Collins away for the last two weeks, Miss Duffy has been in the room (as well as Miss Coffey for a couple of days).

In Mathematics the students have been learning about 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes and this has meant a lot of hands-on learning involving cutting, folding, model making and viewing of shapes. A highlight has been making 3-dimensional models from dough and cutting cross sections to explore the 2-dimensional shapes that can be created from cutting at various points.

In Integrated Studies we have been studying Chemical Science. We have learnt about the different structures of solids, liquids and gases as well as how they react in various circumstances. We have also tested the pH of various liquids and compared their acidity.

The students have been working hard to write their own speeches for the Lions Public Speaking Competition. They have researched what makes a good speech, learnt about delivery techniques and spent a great deal of time writing their own speeches. We are now putting our final touches on the speeches and practicing our delivery.

ART

Flower prints made with plastic bags and paper rolls proved to be very beautiful and effective.

Outdoor Education

We have been learning about all things leafy this fortnight. The student learned about the difference between deciduous trees and evergreen tress and also the parts and functions of leaves. Most students were surprised to learn that leaves have veins, much like us.

We also went on a leaf hunt around the school and were amazed to find such a wide variety of leaves that we normally do not take any notice of.

Our next session is on Thursday May 25th and we are very fortunate to be visited by Lorena Carrington who is a very talented photographic illustrator. The students have already been looking at some of her work and are excited to be creating some illustrations of their own when Lorena comes to our school. Here is a link to Lorena's website, which showcases some of her wonderful work.   https://lorenacarrington.com/

Kelly Sports

How lucky our students are to once again be receiving weekly Kelly Sports Sessions for Term 2. Each Friday our students will have a Kelly Sports Coach come along and teach them some skills and games in a chosen sport. This last Friday was our first session and it was all about AFL Footy skills. Our students love these sessions.
