Foundation Learning Community

Welcome back to school! We hope that you had a lovely Easter and holiday break. Our Foundation students have made a magnificent start to the term and it is wonderful to see them independently completing their morning school routine. We have come so far since our first day together! Well done Foundation children and parents!

Your child will bring home their Term 2 Learning Intention handout, this is an important handout you may like to display on the fridge. It outlines our learning intentions for the Term. Below we have gone into a little more detail of what to expect this term within our classrooms.

Reading

In Reading, we look forward to beginning our Nursery Rhyme and Fairytale unit. Children will continue to think about ‘who’ is in the nursery rhyme/fairytale, ‘what they are doing’ and ‘where’ the nursery rhyme/fairy tale is set. This term we will continue to use our taught reading strategies (e.g stretchy snake, chunky monkey) to help us become confident and fluent readers when reading unknown words.

Writing

In Writing, we are learning to write complex sentences while being SMART spellers. Children are encouraged to make sure they’ve included all 5 colourful semantics in their sentence while writing the initial (beginning) sounds in a word.

We will also continue to work on correctly forming letters and using punctuation in our writing (full stop, capital letter).

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we will continue to explore teen numbers, by breaking up a number into its place value. This term we will begin looking at adding and subtracting small collections. Students will explore addition and subtraction using a variety of materials and applying different strategies. Students will have multiple opportunities to create number stories using counters, number lines and tens frames. We will also explore 2D and 3D shapes within our environment.

Religious Education

We begin our new unit in Religious Education ‘I Am Special, So Are You’. In this unit students will explore and express their unique identity. We will identify their talents and gifts and appreciate the diversity of their peers.

Our second unit we will explore is ‘I Care for God’s World’, we will explore ways in which we can care for God’s world. The students will enjoy a nature walk to Eco Park next week to find the many wonderful things in our world.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we begin our new unit ‘On the Move!’ where we will explore how objects move through push and pull forces.

Reminders

A reminder to make sure all items of clothing and lunch containers are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Hats are not compulsory this term however, your child is welcome to still wear it.

As we return to school it is important to reestablish our routines. This includes nightly reading, practicing SMART spelling words, packing bags, wearing winter uniform and bringing a drink bottle each day.

We look forward to another wonderful term of learning together!
