Prep Learning

The Prep children returned to school eager to see their friends and continue their learning journey this term. Along with all classes, the Preps attended the ‘Living Cultures’ incursion where Lionel and his daughter Skyla, immersed the children in their ancient Indigenous culture and demonstrated how their community worked in harmony with the land. The children were given hands on experiences with their artifacts: boomerangs, carved bowls, possum skins, fire sticks and hunting tools. They learned about the medicinal benefits of native plants to cure headaches and treat snake or spider bites. Lionel played his Yidaki (didgeridoo) and the children learned to perform Australian animal actions through dance and games.
In Mathematics, we have been learning about 2D shapes and their properties, such as the number of sides and corners. We discovered that all 2D shapes are flat and closed shapes that have different names. We made, traced, and went on a Photo Investigation Hunt to look for 2D shapes in our school.
In Literacy, we have completed our first two units of sounds, learned some Tricky Words and have just commenced our decodable reading program at school and at home. We are working on the correct letter formation for the introduced sounds and are writing CVC words (mop, rip, fit) and simple sentences made from these sounds.
It’s full steam ahead for our 16 wonderful prep children!
