Remote Learning

Photos of our Students Learning Remotely

We have around 12 students each day working remotely at school!

Some families have set up special rooms in their homes or even in the garage to create a new learning environment for their children.

The children's faces light up when they see their teachers and friends on the Google Meet and know that they are all learning remotely together.

Having a special place to study that is quiet and helps you to remain focussed.

Meditation at Home is very special and such a sacred and reverent time.

Please keep sending in your photos. It is wonderful to see the students engaged in their learning.

Mathletics

Parent’s Guide

Mathletics is a useful tool, used by students at St. John’s with home learning. Mathletics has many aspects from quick fire calculations, times table music videos and interactive tutorials in line with the maths topics covered in the Victorian Curriculum. This page is intended to assist parents supporting students using Mathletics at home.

Basics

All children in Year P-6 have access to Mathletics through their individual username and password. This gives them access to mathematical games, resources and activities. If your child/children do not know their username and password, please contact their classroom teacher or Kellie Cumming (Math Leader - kcumming@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au).  Mathletics activities are usually set by the class teacher for homework in Year 3 to 6. Once logged on, your child/children will not have access to all the games and activities until the given homework tasks have been completed. It is important that children do their best in these activities as the scores are stored and can be viewed by the class teacher.

Mathletics also requires a modern browser and an up-to-date version of flash player (free from Adobe). Full technical specifications are on the Mathletics website. A Mathletics app can also be downloaded, but at the present time does not seem to have the full functionality of the website. One tip when navigating the website is to avoid pressing your browser’s ‘back’ button. Rather use Mathletics own buttons within the webpage.

Overview

There are a number of features which vary slightly depending on your child’s year level.

Learn - Activities  (Yr P to 6)

The Activity area is where the most focused learning takes place. Mathletics knows which year group your child is in and will provide core exercises on all topics pitched at the child's ability level. As your child completes these exercises the marks are recorded. The aim for each is to get a perfect score. If a child receives a red, they will probably need additional instruction from you or a teacher, although there are video tutorials your child can access by pressing the question mark in the blue circle. They can complete the activity multiple times, and will generally improve through repetition. Points are awarded in each activity which are added for the daily and weekly totals. Using these points, weekly certificates are awarded.

1000 points in a week = Bronze certificate

5 Bronze certificates = Silver certificate

4 Silver certificates = Gold certificate

(A maximum of one certificate in a week. Point totals reset Sunday night)

Learn - Quests (Yr 3 to 6) - new 2020

The Quests are activities based on allowing students to quickly practice fluency skills. They are a series of questions that continually adapt to match students’ ability, giving students a personal learning experience that emulates classroom progression.

Explore - Activities  (Yr 3 to 6) - new 2019

The activities in this section are based around understanding, problem solving and reasoning. Students have the opportunity to explain their thinking by showing working out and giving voice recordings of answers. This is interactive where teachers are able to give personalised feedback.

Explore - Videos (including Magic Mentors and Times Tables Tunes)

Highly engaging math clips presented to teach key concepts.

Play - Live Mathletics (P to 6)

In Live Mathletics, your child can challenge other students to real-time mathematical races that will test the speed and accuracy of mental calculations. They can choose to compete against students  from right across the world, or from school or their class. In Live Mathletics, points, which go towards the weekly totals, and credits, which can be used to purchase items from the virtual shop, are awarded to the children for correct answers and beating their own high scores.

Play - Rainforest Maths (P to 6)

Rainforest Maths is a suite of interactive maths activities, in the areas of Number, Algebra, Space, Measurement, Money and Chance and Data. Students and parents can self guide and practise skills in any of the areas.

PLAY - Other activities

Please note in this section there are other activities such as Mathsterious Mansion (number facts), PlayPaws (addition and subtraction, great for junior level) , Multi Verse (multiplication/ fact fluency game) and Maths A to Z (online math dictionary).

Review (P TO 6)

The opportunity for teachers to assign tests is available in this section.
