Term 2 Week 3 Snapshot
Welcome to Week Three of Home Learning
The Grade 4 team are pleased to say that week 2 of Home Learning was successful with students giving each task a go and proving that they are risk-takers. Thank you for all of your support in assisting your child(ren) at home, ensuring they are ready for the day, explaining tasks when necessary, troubleshooting when technology isn’t working and ensuring that they remember to have breaks away from their devices.
This term we are inquiring into how technology provides opportunities. In Week 3, students will continue exploring how technology helps us in our daily lives, which is particularly relevant given our current situation! They will also be developing strategies to use when they encounter problems with technology. In English, they will continue developing their skills in giving and following explicit instructions, which will assist them as they begin to experiment with coding. In Mathematics, they will be developing their knowledge and understanding of angles, which they will also need to apply when experimenting with coding.
Please read the following overview of the learning tasks for Week 3. These tasks will continue to be posted on Google Classroom with additional instructions and resources the night before each day of learning.
If your child has completed the day's tasks, they may be interested in completing one of these optional tasks. These tasks are open-ended, inquiry based and hands-on.
English
An overview of tasks for reading and writing this week are as follows:
READING
Students should be completing at least 20 minutes of independent reading a day as well as completing the tasks set by the teacher.
- Choosing a fiction or non-fiction text task from a Choice Board
- Exploring and following "How To" videos
- Discussing the language used in "How To" videos
- Comparing the effectiveness of written and video instructions
WRITING
Writing tasks for this week include:
- Reading and commenting on classmates procedural texts
- Writing clear instructions for procedural texts
- Adding pictures or words to procedural texts
- Free Writing Friday
While writing procedural texts, we encourage students to use the writing cycle to ensure they are continuously developing and improving their writing.
The writing cycle consists of five stages:
1. Plan
2. Draft
3. Edit.
4. Revise
5. Publish
Note: Not all pieces need to be published. We encourage the students to write many different writing pieces which they revise and edit. At the end of a unit of work we ask students to choose their best piece to publish.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will begin to explore the concept of angles. They are also encouraged to play number games or use Mathletics to continue practising basic number skills. Students will participate in:
- Number Games - Greedy Pig, Target Number
- Mathletics tasks
- Introduction to angles
- Looking for different angles around the home
- Identifying a right angle
- Understanding that angles are measured in degrees
- Investigating and creating a video about a ramp experiment
Unit of Inquiry
To continue our inquiry into how technology creates opportunities, students will engage in the following tasks:
- Identifying the problems experienced while using technology
- Determining the correct strategies needed when encountering a technological problem
- Explaining the skills and steps needed to solve technological problems
- Exploring code.org and completing one of the options available
- Identifying the skills needed to be a good digital technological user
Wellbeing
This week students will be encouraged to create a Gratitude Jar following some instructions provided by Miss Chadwick.
Here are some additional ideas and resources to support wellbeing during Home Learning:
- Cosmic Kids Yoga (YouTube channel)
- Smiling Mind (mindfulness app)
- Art Hub for kids (YouTube channel)
- Go Noodle
- Mindfulness Challenge Cards (on Google Classroom)
