News from the Performing Arts Room

Welcome to a new and exciting year in Performing Arts. The Performing Arts team consists of Peta Murray and Jess Syme. Jess will be teaching Foundation and Years 1/2. Peta will teach Years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

All students in years 1 – 6 learn the recorder. Learning the recorder will assist children enormously in developing the ability to read music. There have been many studies conducted that recognise that learning an instrument is also beneficial to children’s academic progress. Below is a list of equipment needed to run this program. Students will be required to bring this equipment to their Performing Arts lessons each week. These items are available through the school at a cheaper price than you would pay through retail outlets.

  • Recorder - The one available through the school is the Yamaha descant recorder.
  • Recorder Cleaner
  • Recorder Book - The book that we will be using is called ‘Black Belt Recorder’ – Book 1.
  • Music bag to keep recorder, sheet music and recorder book together.
  • An A4 display folder - This will be used to keep additional photocopied music. (This is provided through the school)

Year 1 students and any new students to the school will receive their music bags and equipment during Performing Arts lessons over the next few weeks. Equipment will be kept at school and stored in the Performing Arts room. Children may take their music bags home to practice, but must remember to return it to school before the next Performing Arts lesson.

In 2020, there will be a variety of extension Performing Arts Groups available for students to join. These include Junior Orchestra, Senior Orchestra, Junior Choir, Intermediate Choir, Senior Vocal Group and Senior Dance Group.

INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM

Enrolment forms for learning an instrument at school during 2020 are available from the office and on Compass.  Please complete and return these forms ASAP as lessons for term 1 will begin next week and places are limited.

Great Ryrie Primary School has qualified teachers who are able to teach a variety of instruments including Bass Guitar*, Drums/Percussion, Trumpet*, Trombone*, Euphonium*, Saxophone*, Clarinet*, Flute*, Violin*, Cello, Piano, Contemporary Keyboard, Guitar (All styles including Bass Guitar)*.

* A limited number of these instruments are available for hire from the school at $65.00 per term with a re-fundable $65.00 bond. Asterixed (*) instruments only.

Acceptance into lessons and hiring instruments will be taken in the order that forms are returned. EXISTING 2019 STUDENTS MUST ALSO RE-ENROL AND FILL OUT A 2020 ENROLMENT FORM.

Julian: Guitar, Keyboard and Orchestra Leader

Carmen: Brass (Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium)

Vicky: Violin, Cello and Keyboard

Meri: Woodwind and Reeds (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone)

Meet our Instrumental Staff

Each week, we will introduce some of our staff.

 

Julian is a confident multi-instrumental teacher, band leader, and able composer with advanced aural skills and an infectious enthusiasm for music. Julian is experienced in providing tuition to people with learning challenges, and is dedicated to creating positive experiences that provide his students with joy and support in developing healthy learning habits. 

 

Carmen was born deaf, but that never stopped her from picking up the trumpet! Growing up playing music to the cows on her family’s farm, Carmen decided to make the big move to the city to pursue music. She completed her Bachelor and Masters of Music which focuses on performing music with profound hearing loss. She’s a music teacher by day and a trumpet lass by night, playing in various big bands and orchestras in and around Melbourne and Victoria.
