Photo Album 1950 –1971  Sacré Cœur Archives

A photo booklet was produced for the Sacré Cœur Alumnae Association High Tea held on Sunday 23 May 2021. The occasion also celebrated the reunions of the classes of 1950, 1951, 1960, 1961, 1970 and 1971.

Guests received a copy of the booklet and it was also sent to those unable to attend from the reunion groups.

Please contactMelinda Adamsif you would like a copy to be posted to you.

Catte

Catte was played at Sacré Cœur until at least the late 1940s/1950s, generally in winter. It was similar to rounders or baseball but consisted of two teams of twelve and a catte ring of twelve posts set in a circle. When the batter hit the ball, she called the number of posts to be run. Each “in” team member then had to run around the circle hitting each post in turn until they reached the post designated by the batter. To be “out” you were either caught or you were stumped if your baton was not touching the post.

The catte ring was located at the front of the school until the 1960s when the area became the oval.

The game was played in many Sacred Heart schools as well as in other schools with a French tradition such as Genazzano. Our 1944 school annual records that senior classes spent a day at Genazzano competing in catte and tennis. Unfortunately, all three Sacré Cœur catte teams were beaten.

During the 1988 centenary year it was re-introduced to a new generation of students.

Can you help to add to our archive collection?

We are always appreciative when alumnae are able to donate or loan precious items to the school for the archives collection.

We would especially love to receive some more photos and memorabilia from the 1970s.

Photos can be scanned and returned to you.
