Winter Sports

With only two home games remaining, there has been much discussion and planning around the end of season break-up for winter sports. This year all Captains have decided to join together and have one awesome break-up for all 4 sports. Thanks to the work of the Sports Support Group, their funds have allowed the girls to plan a fun afternoon of activities and food at the College. Full details will be posted on the app from Friday highlighting jumping castles, games and music with Subway rolls and drinks for all. Please ensure girls keep from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm free on Saturday 11 September, straight after their final QG winter fixture.

Last week’s return to sport saw some amazing gameplay and some real highlights. Our Senior C tennis team got to play their first fixture of the season and came away with a very convincing 36-14 win against Somerville House. It is just a shame that this team has had so few opportunities to show what they are capable of. Our Senior A hockey team continued their winning form with a 5 – 0 win and in volleyball, 8A, 10A and Opens all won with Opens going down to the wire and coming out on top winning the 5th set 15 – 13. Even though our Senior A volleyball team didn’t win, they did win their first set which was very well celebrated by all. This week we play Brisbane State High which should be another highly competitive round that our teams are looking forward to.

Athletics

The College has made the decision to send all secondary students along to QSAC on Thursday 16 September to cheer on and support our QG Athletics team. It is going to be a wonderful day of competition which will showcase some our top athletes, many of whom have achieved a number of PB’s at training and at last week’s meet. Training has certainly made a difference to all those who attend regularly with some beating their IH Athletics results by a substantial amount and establishing new PB’s in a number of events. It will certainly make watching and cheering a very exciting and entertaining way to finish Term 3.

Week 9 is the last full week of training and the second and last meet in preparation for QG Athletics. We would really like all girls to continue their work at training this coming week and ask all members of the training squad to attend either Monday afternoon at Bowden Park or the Friday afternoon meet at UQ. These two sessions will be the only ones where we can practise our relay changes and ensure all events have the best athletes available competing in them. Based on these results, a full team list will be posted on Monday 13 September.

Wednesday 15 September will be a College Spirit Day commencing with a full team breakfast in the morning after training, thanks again to the work of the Sports Support Group. This will be followed by a spirit tunnel, school war cry and dance party at lunchtime. It will be a great lead-in for the girls to ensure they are pumped up and ready to compete on the Thursday.

Full details of the QGSSSA Athletics competition and transport will be posted next week in the Collective and on the College app.

Term 4 Sports

Badminton and junior softball training have commenced with many girls joining both sports which is great to see. A full training schedule is located on the app and girls are asked to check this at the start of every week as there are minor changes due to other events occurring over the next few weeks. Please ensure that both parents and students have uploaded the College app onto your device as it is the most up-to-date information available and will alert you of any changes and updates to previous information.

Volleyball Academy

The Clayfield Volleyball Academy continues every Monday from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the PE Centre. Please see Ms Barnes if you are keen to join to collect the paperwork. Any girls who choose to leave the program MUST send an email to confirm this or payments will still be added to your College fees.

Australian Volleyball has recently sent our information regarding the Talent Identification trials that are due to be held later this month. The flyer can be found on the College app.

Metropolitan North Trials

Metropolitan North has released a revised schedule for the remainder of 2021.

Any girls aged 13 – 14 years who have played soccer and/or futsal who would like to trial for Met Nth Futsal should contact Ms Barnes and collect a nomination form. These need to be returned by Monday 6 September. If a district trial is required, it will be held at the YMCA at Bowen Hills from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm on Tuesday 7 September.

Please see Ms Barnes if you are interested in attending any of the events to discuss your suitability and the process for trialling. Note that these trials are for experienced players, not those wishing to try a sport.

Elite Sporting Program - Sport Specialist Series

The ESP Sports Series 2 continued in Week 8 with another wonderful presentation by Sam Armstrong from Peak Nutrition. Sam workshopped the girls this week and got them to look at a few key micronutrients in their diet to see if they were consuming the level required. The girls found this a very eye-opening session and really valued the insights into their own food journey and the expertise and relatedness that Sam brings to her sessions. The number one message is that the girls need to consume enough food to be able to perform, grow and learn every day. A range of resources was sent home with the girls to help them track this. If any parents would like a copy of the nutrition presentations or handouts from the session, please email Ms Christine Barnes.

The next session is on Wednesday 13 October. This session will be with our newer member of the sports specialist team, Mrs Natasha Anderson who will be sharing her Girls with Grit philosophy with the girls. Further details about this presentation will come next term.
