House Captains Nicole Sikora and Aaron Li

House Captains, Nicole Sikora and Aaron Li, have written their thoughts about the year so far.  It’s been a frustrating year once again as lockdowns continue to disrupt our lives; I think we all hoped that when we finished 2020 we were finished with Covid, but sadly that wasn’t to be.

Nicole’s thoughts:

What a year it has been.

Going into this year and taking on the role as Delphinus House Captain was a completely new experience for me.  While some of it has sadly been spent in lockdown, there is no doubt that it has been an incredible learning experience so far.

As for many of us, this lockdown has been a tough time, but as with everything, it does get better.  Personally, I have found that going outside after school and stepping away from the screen, even for a short period, can help me reset and set myself up for success the next day, and I highly encourage you all to try the same.

Over the course of this year, I’ve had the opportunity to experience so many new things and make so many new friends.  From our Year 12 Retreat, to even our most recent pastoral volleyball game, I am lucky enough to be a part of an inclusive and ever-growing community both within our house and school.

While these are not ideal circumstances, 2021 has for many of us been one of the most memorable years at St John's.  I am grateful for the students and teachers that I have been able to build meaningful relationships with over the course of this year and I can’t wait to finish the year off on a positive note, and hopefully face-to-face.

Once again, I encourage everyone to take this lockdown as another opportunity to reflect and reach out to those around you!

Aaron’s thoughts:

Ah 2021.

Arguably it has been one of the most unpredictable years, not only for we students and teachers at St John's but the rest of the world.  We started the year off with an excellent swimming carnival as well as other fun events such as Harmony Day.  While we started off the year with a bang, sadly lockdown struck again, but it should’ve been a bit easier than last year considering we basically spent a year indoors.

As a Delphinus House Captain, it has brought me many smiles seeing everyone and all the homerooms participating in house activities, in particular, the recent House Volleyball Tournament and the House Rowing.  Although there have been many obstacles, one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had this year was the Year 12 Retreat, away on one last final camp for the Year 12 cohort of 2021.

Despite the seemingly never-ending lockdowns, I encourage everyone to persevere and keep going because it’s only going to get better from here.  Go out for walks, breathe the fresh air, do anything to get you moving and more importantly, just enjoy your time with your family.

We’re going to finish off the year with a bang, so keep your heads up!
