Newdegate Machinery Field Days

At a dark 6.00am on Wednesday both Year Ten Contemporary Music classes loaded the bus with guitars, leads, amps and other musical equipment and departed Great Southern Grammar to head to the small country town of Newdegate. A place some of our boarders call home. The three-hour bus trip travelled through a number of small towns and countryside covered in Canola, things were pretty quiet for the three hour journey as we all made the most of our playlists, headphones and many snacks packed for the road.

Unpacking was an easy job with many hands, while Mrs Boyce arranged fresh donuts, cooked by Fletcher and Pierce. Once we had set up in our small tent (after removing the hay bales), we were all very excited to explore as much of the Machinery Field Day as we could. We had an hour to explore making sure we visited Mrs Ball and Mrs Bairstow on the Grammar stall amongst our search for free hats and other goodies.

Our first set started at 11.00am and the first class performed their seven songs bringing in the audience and introducing us as the Great Southern Grammar music students. The second class performed their set and continued to entertain the crowd, bringing in some future students who danced and sang along to our bands. After a short break we were starting up again with the first class reperforming their set and perfecting their songs for the growing crowd. We finished our sets just as the rain came in and we packed up in record time, stacking everything into the bus and making our way back home. The bus ride home was filled with many sleeping students as well as a sleep deprived Mr Burke being caught on camera by none other than Mr Tompkin.

This was a great experience I am sure we will all remember and special thanks to Mr Burke, Mr Tompkin and Mrs Boyce. I am sure we will all remember the size of the tent, the hay and the smells from those food vans as we sang and played for the community of Newdegate.
