Year Nine 'Alternate' Camp

Last week on Wednesday the Year Nine students gathered in the undercover area to begin an amazing three days of fun. We started by splitting up into three groups and meeting the Outdoor Education Group (OEG) leaders who would run the program for us for the next three days. In the coming days everyone participated in different activities such as, bush walks, canoeing, bush craft and shelter making, as well as various games and activities.

The two bush walks

The first bush walk (Luke Penn Trail) was very close to the school, along the Kalgan River. We all talked and got to know each other as we completed the 7km walk. During both of the walks we used a system called “backdoor, Charlie” this system involved the leader (front person) yelling “backdoor” and the last person replying with “Charlie” if they could hear. The purpose of the system was to make sure we stayed as a group whilst we walked.

The second bush walk which was noticeably shorter (2.5km) was from Two Peoples Bay to neighboring, Little Beach. It had some beautiful scenery along the way. We used the same system, keeping everyone together as one group. At the end some groups had time to go for a quick swim in the rock pools.

Canoeing

Canoeing on the Kalgan River was a great way to get wet and get all your friends drenched. Some of us left damp whereas others left soaked from head to toe. Everyone had lots of fun working in pairs to navigate the canoes around the river.

Bush craft and shelter building

During this activity we learnt how to pack a backpack, how to set up a hoochie, how to use a Trangia and check the best spot for a camp. Lots of us enjoyed the challenge of setting up a hoochie. There were bent tent pegs from one group, but we all had lots of fun.

Overall, it was a great experience that we all enjoyed. I would like to thank Mr McLean, Mrs O’Donnell, Miss Smith, Ms Valleri, and all the staff from OEG for organising such an amazing experience during these uncertain times.

Hospitality

Year Seven

Apple muffins were on the menu this week, as a quick, healthy snack to make using up fruit that probably would have been wasted.  Students learnt about food wastage and the different types of delicious fruit that can be added to muffins based on a wholemeal flour dry mix, and a healthy fat (olive oil) wet mix.

Year Eight

The grain group and the dairy group of the five food groups were analysed by our Year Eight students recently.  They realised rice, as well as wheat and corn, are popular staple grains and that fried rice is a great recipe to use those end-of-week vegetables in, and it can even be made using brown rice to increase ones fibre intake.  It was a fun lesson tasting different types of dairy and dairy alternative milk varieties.  We analysed the ease and cost of making homemade yoghurt.  Using the Greek-style yoghurt made the lesson before, some beautiful lemon yoghurt cakes were produced.
