Hello everyone, my name is Emma and I am the Communication Prefect for 2022. I am very thrilled to be back after a long, well-deserved break and hope that everyone has had a great start to the year. I would like to start by saying how impressed I am with the amount of optimism that the school community has spread, given the new changes and current restrictions. Students have taken the initiative to follow mask wearing regulations and split separately into year groups.

The theme for this week is resilience. Resilience relates to the process of adapting well in the face of challenges or stress and I think that this theme fits well with our current situations as we must think positively to achieve the best possible outcomes. A great way of thinking about resilience is that it is similar to a balance scale. If all thoughts are negative, one side of the scale will pile up building up weight and forcing one side of the scale to tip downwards, ultimately resulting in negative outcomes. If there is too much weight on the negative side, it can be difficult to balance out the weight again and tip the scale back to the positive end.

Something that was beneficial to me was that I would organise my scale with stacks of positive components to prevent the downfall and result of negative outcomes.

Earlier this year, the new restrictions scared me and I was worried that my year group would miss out on so many events that we had been looking forward to for most of our schooling. Ideas and alternatives shocked me, as I realised we may not achieve the traditional events that we had hoped for. This is where resilience came into play. If we make the worst out of everything, the worst is yet to come. We must be able to adapt and slowly take one day at a time with an open and optimistic mind. If events change, we must send our minds straight to the positives and go above our negative thoughts to take the best out of everything.

I discovered this quote that sums up the idea of resilience for the week.

“Train your mind to see the good in everything. Positively is a choice. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.” - Marcangel
