From the 1/2 Classrooms

Mathematics in Team 1/2

In Mathematics sessions, our Grade 1 and 2 students have been learning about data, focusing on collection, graphing and interpreting. They have also been exploring time in reference to months and seasons.

As the students are still getting to know their classmates, they were given the opportunity to explore these concepts and skills when learning more about their peers.

Students worked together to develop appropriate and relevant questions to pose, such as;

‘Which month is your birthday in?’ ‘When is your birthday?’

‘Which is your favourite season?’ ‘Which season do you like the best?’

‘Which season is your birthday in?’ Is your birthday in Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring?’

When gathering their peers’ responses, students explored using tally marks to record and sort the information into different categories (e.g. months of the year, seasons).

After collecting the responses, students represented this data as either pictographs, column or bar graphs. Some were made into a class display, others were completed individually by students.

Students were then supported to describe and interpret the data displays with leading questions such as;

Which month has the most birthdays?

How many birthdays are in April?

Which season was the most popular?

How many more people like Summer than Autumn?

Which season has the least number of birthdays?

*** Grade 1/2s, maybe you could find out about the birthdays and favourite seasons in your family. What questions would you ask? ***
