From the 5/6 Classrooms

Financial literacy in the classroom

Students learn well when they can apply their understandings from their classrooms into real world scenarios. So how do we best engage our students in understanding financial literacy?

At Boroondara Park we have, for some time in years 5 and 6, utilised an online platform called Banqer to help align classroom rights and responsibilities with an evolving awareness of the world of finance and how we, as individuals, need to be confident in our knowledge and understanding of money.

Banqer is a financial education platform that provides a hands-on environment for our students to get curious, creative, and ultimately, confident with money.

If you haven't already heard about this activity ask your child how they are doing with their 'banqing' at school. Students will be learning about many aspects of succesful financial self-management as the year progresses, so be prepared for conversations around tax brackets, investing in term deposits and the property market and why we need to pay to insure our properties.

Many of our classroom teachers use this great resource to facilitate class based rewards and jobs that additionally allow our students to craft a CV to target their 'dream' classroom position and, once appointed, to uderstand the value of earning a wage as well as the need to pay taxes and fees. The platform also has great scope to promote a sense of student voice in our classrooms, as an example, students determine the jobs to be fulfilled in their classroom, what the job description should read like and also what a fair wage is based upon skill required and time taken; a personal favourite is the 'Uber Eats Driver', who in reality collects the daily lunch orders!

We hope you enjoy hearing from your child about their classroom banq.
