Junior School

As we are well into Term 1, it has been wonderful to see the students settling into their learning routines. I have really enjoyed celebrating the successes of students as they have shown me their school work. I have also loved celebrating with teachers as they have shared with me various stories of student learning breakthroughs. Our teachers really delight in working with individuals to find a way for individual success. There is a real joy in seeing the penny drop for a student.

It has also been great to see the Year 6 and Prep buddies together throughout the term. I popped in today to take some photos (see below) of them enjoying each other’s company during the fun activity that Miss Agnew and Miss Hazeldine had prepared.

Just a reminder to keep your children at home if they are unwell, even if they have tested negative for COVID. Thank you for helping us minimise the spread of illness throughout our Junior School.

Prep

The Prep students have been so excited to meet and spend time with their Year 6 buddies. We get to do lots of fun things with our buddies on a Monday and Thursday afternoon. Today we listened to the story 'Goat on a boat' and then made a picture to go with it. Thank you to the Year 6 students for being such good buddies.

Year 1

Our daily devotions have been focused on how big God and his creation is. Everywhere we look, we see signs of his greatness. The Year 1 students are studying living and non-living things. With the use of microscopes, they have been able to view some of the details of God’s creation, learning that feathers have barbs and ants have hairs on their legs! Here are some of their thoughts:

"I looked at a leaf under the microscope. It was creepy." - Alyra Haworth

"I looked at a Spider under the microscope. It looked interesting."  - Loretta Liu

"I looked at a Daddy Long Legs under the microscope. It was amazing and incredible." - Mosese Tuisuva

"I looked at an Ant under the microscope. It was giant." - Jordy Gittins

"I looked at a Spider under the microscope. It was horrifying." - Ethan Craig

"I looked at a wing of a Dragonfly under the microscope." - Eleanor Adcock

Year 2 students have enjoyed creating their own self portraits in Art class this week. We all agreed many of the portraits looked very life-like! Their bright, detailed and eye-catching pieces will be a delight to display in the classroom. Well done Year 2.

The Year 3 students have enjoyed classifying all the invertebrate animals we found in the school garden. The results were approximately 4 spiders (arachnids), 10 snails (molluscs), 2 slaters (crustaceans) and 1000+ insects (soldier beetles, ants, flies, caterpillars, Christmas beetles).

Year 4

On Friday, some students from Years 4 to 6 headed out with me to the Hamilton Olympic Swimming Pool to compete in the SSV Division Swimming Championships. There were quite a few nerves as we drove up in the bus, but the students swam amazingly well and all had a terrific time. Congratulations to Lottie Ward (Year 5), who came first in breaststroke. We will have a few of our swimmers going through to the next round. Well done King's College students.

Year 5

The Year 5 students have started reading Colin Theile's novel, Storm Boy. They had a look at different book cover designs and made predictions on what they think the story will be about. We will be exploring and discussing the rich vocabulary and imagery in the novel as well as researching the Coorong, where the story is set.

Year 6

Last week we visited the Prep students in their classroom. I read them the book 'The Little Chelone' and then Miss Agnew showed us the fun activity we were about to do. We helped the preps paint the sea with food colouring and make turtles out of coloured paper. We get to find out who our buddies are soon and we are all very excited!

Interschool Tennis Competition

Ashaan Davies (Year 6), Tilly Veenstra (Year 5) and I participated in the Interschool Tennis Competition on the clay courts at Beachside Tennis Academy. We played singles matches against Merrivale, Allansford and West Warrnambool. We all played well, and I was lucky enough to make it through to the next round. Thanks to Miss Stephen and Miss Hazeldine for organising and scoring on the day and to Beachside Tennis Academy for letting us play.
