Teaching and Learning

Room 3

Who knew that Fruit Loops and Relay Races would be a good way to learn about Place Value in mathematics???

Room 3 did!!!

Over the last few weeks, we have been learning about place value; reading numbers to a million, looking at the value of each number, and using a variety of ways to represent large numbers up to 10,000.

Activities have included using MAB blocks in a relay race outside, where teams work together to create the number being shown on the whiteboard. Students needed to recognise the value of each block, and how many are required to make the whole number. Problem solving and teamwork were the key to success.

Room 3 used playdough, skewers, and Fruit Loops to represent numbers up to ten thousand, developing an understanding of the value of the number in each place. We also created a Bacon & Eggs challenge where toast was worth 100, bacon 10 and eggs 1... Students had to decide how much breakfast they wanted to eat and represent it on their plates.

We have also played a series of board games to help us understand how to read larger numbers, order them from smallest to largest (and vice-versa), represent numbers in written form, expanded form and using MAB blocks...

Maths is so much fun!!"

"We had to roll out the playdough and put 3 sticks in it. On the board the teacher would do numbers. It was fun to make the same numbers on the stick in their order. That was my favourite bit" Lilah year 2

"Fruit loop game was fun as it made place value easy for me. It was fun and colourful." Anna (year 2)

"I liked the writing and the drawing in the bacon and eggs" - Leo year 1

"I loved playing with the bacon and eggs placemat it made maths more fun." Ayla year 2

"I loved the place value games" - Lucas year 2

Did you know we have our very own Japanese Garden at WBPS?

The mural and garden were designed, painted and planted by the students back in 2016! It is a well-established garden now that needs regular maintenance to help keep it looking great.

A big 'arigato' (thank you) to Gracie, Lucy, Addi and Savvy from Rms 7 & 8. They worked hard before school to weed, water and tidy up our space. You did a fantastic job!

Science News

Rooms 1, 2, 4 and 6 have been learning about weather patterns and what we need to do to protect ourselves from the wind, rain and sun. They have been busy making a purpose-built shelter to provide protection for a teddy bear. Next week we will be testing their designs to see if their shelter holds up against the wind (a fan), the sun (a torch) and the rain (a spray bottle).

Good luck everyone!
