Year Level Reps 2018

Year Level Representatives play a vital role at Galilee. They ensure our school families are kept up to date with what is happening, create long lasting connections for our families and support the class teachers.

In 2018 our class parent representative roles will be slightly different. The two major changes are:

1. There will be year level representatives rather than parents assigned to their own child’s class. This is to further develop relationships across the year level.

2. Each year level in 2018 will have one Galilee Event that they are to take the lead on and the representatives for that year level will need to help coordinate parents in their year to run that event with the support of the Events Committee.

Below are the Year Level Representative Role and Responsibilities. Please take the time to consider volunteering for this important and rewarding role at Galilee in 2018. We aim to have all Year Level Reps in place before the end of the 2017 school year.

Please email Brighid Fahy bfahy@gsmelbournesth.catholic.edu.au or Holly Evans hevans@gsmelbournesth.catholic.edu.au if you are interested in volunteering to take on this role in 2018 or if you have any further questions.

Violin Teacher 2018

It is with sadness that we bid farewell to Clementine who has taught our students violin with such care and proficiency. Clementine is studying education and hoping to qualify as a teacher in the future. We thank her for the work she has done. We advertised the role and received a number applicants before interviewing candidates and asking them to demonstrate a lesson. We thank Claudia Mc (Year 3) for being the student to be taught by the applicants. Clementine will be replaced by Katherine Hewitt who began her musical studies at the early age of five. She then went onto further her studies at the University of Melbourne where she completed her Masters in Performance Teaching, her Bachelor of Music with an Honours year and her Graduate Diploma in Education. She has had pedagogic mentoring by Wilma Smith and Sarah Curro. Katherine has performed throughout Australia, Asia, New Zealand and currently performs with Melbourne Opera and Celtic Illusion on a regular basis.

Katherine has been the recipient of many awards and scholarships including, Trinity College London Associate Diploma in Recital in Violin with Distinction 2008, Trinity College London Licentiate Diploma in Recital in Violin 2009, AMEB Theory of Music 6th Grade 2007, AMEB Certificate of Performance in Piano 2010, Australian New Zealand Cultural Arts Associate in Performance in Piano 2011 and most recently her Australian New Zealand Cultural Arts Performance Diploma in Piano 2017, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra Prize 2010, Vivien Gough Memorial Scholarship, Ivy May Pendelbury Scholarship, Kenneth Moore Music Scholarship and the Corinna D’Hage Mayer String Scholarship.

Katherine believes music is something everyone can enjoy at any level or age. Her teaching philosophy is based around a scaffolding program which breaks down each element of the violin and music, allowing students to develop a strong musical foundation. She also combines this with an individually tailored program which allows each student to explore their own creativity and musical interests. It is her mission to give students the opportunities and skills to create lifelong, positive memories with music.

DOGS Message

Well that was the year it was, as they say in the classics!

Wednesday Night saw the “Final Wag of the Tail”, as the DOGS rallied around to squeeze in one final get together before Christmas.

And what a night it was, after a 38 degree Melbourne day, appetites were tantalised by smoked meats and a few cold drinks. Thanks to MeatWorks South Melbourne for generously providing the food bowl during the evening, for the 2nd year running. It was stated last night that a couple of Dads are yet to miss any of our DOGs functions, I’m not sure if they need a life, but I think it’s more their nature of wanting to be involved and give back. Nevertheless it needs to be noted, and we honour their commitment, sadly they remain nameless, under DOGS Policy!

After what has been another galvanising year for the Dads of Galilee, it has been pleasing to see more and more dads feel welcomed and part of the group, and the benefit of networking within the school community.

Over the course of the year there has been many contributions which have added to the rich fabric of community we have within our school. In turn many have witnessed the closer liaison within the parent groups and the knowledge of what can be offered to further enhance the school. From  memory, the most all embracing event was the “The DOGS Breakfast”, which brought together many attributes of teamwork and solidarity and embraced within footy colours day. With over 260 Dads and Kids, Mums leading from the front, serving and cooking pancakes and pies, and the get in and get underneath attitude by all, the  feedback from the morning was phenomenal.

Closing out the events calendar for the  year was  the DADS and KIDS camp which saw the icing on the cake. Around 90 were there to witness the amazing energy and comradery shown across all year levels.

Upon reflection, we feel that the more and more Dads have become active in many parts of the school framework, volunteering in classes, greater involvement with pickup and drop-off, ideas and solutions for ongoing and  future development. This further strengthens our already amazing and integral contributions made by fundraising and social committees within the tapestry of Galilee.

Many thanks for an incredible year and all your generous donations and contributions, there were many great ideas in the room last night, so rest assured the DOGS are fired up!

We look towards 2018, and I would say that anyone who is involved with volunteering or providing their expertise within and for the school, that you have all done an amazing job. There is never enough people on “Team Galilee” and I would urge you all to become involved in one way or another. Lastly but not least to all the staff and the front of office who have supported the DADS over the year and in ways that are seamless, but most importantly vital. We value the support of Wendy, Tegan and Simon and take this opportunity to appreciate their hard work and infectious smiling faces.
