Year Five News

Dear Year Five Families,

Last week, students wrapped up their fifth unit of inquiry for the year. Students were learning under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Organise Ourselves and had the opportunity to investigate a human-made system of their choice. Students are to be congratulated for their hard work and determination. Presentations were well thought out and presented with pride.

Unit of Inquiry

This week, students begin to learn under the transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves. As the unit begins, students will be identifying the various social issues we can possibly face within our community and globally. They will also be exposed to a range of artists that have expressed their feelings about different social issues and how this can benefit a specific cause. This unit will allow students to be part of a mini exhibition within their cohort to express their feelings about a social issue of their choice.

English

Throughout reading and writing, students have begun a unit on poetry. Students will be afforded the opportunity to explore a range of poems and identify their key features and structures. In reading, students will explore different types of figurative language and how they can be used to express feelings and emotions. In writing, students will be writing their own poems, beginning with a free verse. This unit will encourage students to use poetry in their exhibition for their social issue.

Mathematics

The mathematical focus for this unit of inquiry is shape, geometric reasoning and chance. Students will be using these concepts to enhance their artistic skills in their investigation of their chosen social issue. Students will be part of fluid groupings to support their learning levels with rich lessons using the Launch, Explore, Discuss model. They will use their prior knowledge in number to assist in understanding various shapes, objects, angles and probability.
