Year Four News

Written by the Year Four Team

This week students in Year Fours have continued investigating the Transdisciplinary theme 'How The World Works' focusing on the Central Idea of ' Patterns may only be evident at a certain time.'

Focusing on the line's of inquiry into:

The Earth’s rotation (Function)

The patterns influenced by time (Change)

Literacy

We have begun our exploration of procedural writing, specifically how to write a procedure, during literacy lessons. The Year Four students have been introduced to new vocabulary and the various aspects found in a procedural text. As a result of these courses, the students were introduced to a number of mentor texts and developed their own approach for the Nancy Carlson novel "How to Lose All Your Friends." It was exciting to see what ideas all the students had!

Students were given a procedure relating to light during our enjoyable reading exercise. With a twist, the Year Fours had to create their own steps with the aid of the photographs. This was an excellent method for showing the kids how using verbs to convey explicit description will result in a successful result.

Mathematics

The math group rotations have continued with excellent success,  this week the Year Four students are learning more about Units of Measurement. Students were given the chance to investigate a need through fluid groups. We concentrated on comparing things using well-known metric volume and area units. Students had the chance to measure themselves and investigate which metric unit would be most appropriate for the measurement they were about to make. This unit has been a huge success thus far and is a lot of fun!
