Year One News

Written by the Year One Team

Hello Year One families,

In Reading, we are focusing on retelling and summarising texts. A retell is where you include as much detail as possible about the text, including the characters names, the settings, problem, events and solution. A summary is where you only include the important details about the text. Students are encouraged to retell and summarise the text during their daily home reading to consolidate their comprehension.

In Writing, we have continued to learn about narrative texts. Students have learnt about characters inside traits, that is their personality and their behaviour, as well as what a problem is and how you must lead up to the solution. The students have written detailed paragraphs describing characters, a setting, a problem and a solution. Students have begun to put all that knowledge together to draft their own narratives. During their writing, they will continue to focus on correct spelling and grammar.

In Numeracy, we have commenced a unit on mass. Students have been exposed to vocabulary such as light, lightest, heavy, heaviest,  same and mass. They have been given opportunities to identify and compare the mass of different objects through hefting and using balance scales. Students have been able to describe whether an object is light or heavy. Next week, they will be learning about volume and capacity.

For Inquiry, we have been continuing our final Unit of Inquiry for this year. Our central idea is ‘How our culture unites us as a community’, with the Lines of Inquiry being, ‘An inquiry into family structures and communities’ and ‘An inquiry into cultural stories’. Students have been learning more about different cultures, celebrations and families. They have researched and drawn their own country’s flag and learnt about where each country represented in their class is on the world map. Students have been open-minded when listening to each other sharing about their culture.

Weekly Reminders

Job Day is on the 14th of November. Students can come dressed up as what they would like to be when they grow up.

Our school day starts promptly at 8:30am, the doors are unlocked at 8:20am for the children to come in and get themselves ready for the day. If your child arrives after 8:40am, they must get a late pass from the office.

We are a SunSmart school so school hats must be worn in Terms Four and One, please make sure it's clearly labelled with their name. If your child has lost their hat, check with their classroom teacher and check in lost property, located in the office area.

Please remember to bring fully charged iPads every day. We use these for different purposes, such as accessing Reading Eggs, Epic, Mathletics, assessments and learning tasks on Essential Assessment, as well as uploading work to Schoolbox for you to enjoy. There are only a small number of school iPads which are borrowed on a first come first serve basis.

Please speak with your child’s classroom teacher if you have any concerns, questions, or queries.
