Spotlight on Literacy

Each fortnight a different grade will be in the SPOTLIGHT sharing Literacy inside the classrooms!

Welcome to Literacy in Year 2!

In Year 2, we have been reading the book ‘One Runaway Rabbit’ by David Metzenthen. This Term we are exploring narratives. We learnt about the structure of a narrative and how we can hook the reader in with a sizzling start at the beginning, create tension and excitement in the middle with a complication and finish with a resolution.

This week we learnt about adjectival phrases and how we can add more detail to our narratives. Did you know an adjectival phrase is a phrase that contains an adjective? But there's more to it than that, an adjectival phrase is a phrase that acts as an adjective by describing a noun.

We are very excited to begin writing our own narratives following the correct structure and including adjectival phrases!

Public Speaking Competition at OLF

Public speaking has significant importance in developing speaking and listening skills. It is an integral part of overall literacy development, specifically, the development of skills and techniques to demonstrate understanding through fluent, coherent, cohesive speech – for audiences and purposes. Public speaking encourages students to speak in front of an audience more confidently and helps reduce the fear of talking in front of a crowd.

This term we will introduce and hold a K-6 whole school Public Speaking Competition at OLF where every student will be expected to prepare and deliver a short speech to their classmates. The process will begin in the classroom with students being introduced to their topics and assisted to begin writing their speeches. They will be given the opportunity to work on them at home and practice them in preparation to deliver them to an audience. After teachers listen to all the students' speeches the finalists from each class will deliver their speeches in front of their grade during Week 7 or 8 and the winners from each grade will be awarded a trophy. More information outlining the process of the competition will be sent home with your child.
