5/6 NEWS

Life in the Senior School

It has been an action packed term and the last two weeks have been no exception. We had 3 fantastic days of lightning premierships where every student who wanted to, was able to compete in soccer, netball and football. We were really impressed with the students behaviour and their attitude to do their best.

We have also been working on their brain projects and finishing off their 'We are Wolves' presentations. We would like to thank all the families for their support over this semester and your kind words, it makes our school an amazing place to be. Over the well earned holiday period, we strongly encourage the students to read their novels and keep up with their times tables.

MATHEMATICS

Students have been looking at volume, capacity, area and perimeter and completing some mini projects in their own classes rather than in our Maths catch groups. We have continued our work on quick number facts which will be continued throughout this whole year. If your child is ever at a loose end and looking for something to do, then times tables and number facts games would be hugely beneficial as they head towards Secondary School.

Below are some examples of the language we will be focusing on in our Maths lessons:

perimeter

the units around the shape

  • area
  • the units inside the shape
  • radius half the diameter,
  • a segment that connects the centre to the circle
  • chord
  • a segment that has endpoints on the circle
  • diameter
  • perimeter,
  • area,
  • radius,
  • chord,
  • diameter,
  • circumference,
  • base,
  • height,
  • perpendicular,
  • complex figure

Volume can mean how much space something takes up. You could measure a bean's volume by placing it in water and measuring the water's rise. You can also use volume as you measure sound or the number of books in a series.

Capacity describes your ability to do something or the amount something can hold.

ENGLISH

The students have been finishing off projects on our class novel 'We are Wolves'. It has been great to see the students show a really deep understanding on how to use different reading skills throughout the book. The students have been able to infer so much information about the different characters and their different journeys throughout the book. It has been pleasing to see all students answer different questions using written form, digital technology or class discussions.

We have continued our work on poetry writing with the students concluding  by writing their own. Here are some examples of our brilliant student's work.

Gustav the fish

- By Levi Stevenson

Gustav is a fish

A magical one

He grants you 5 fishes

And lets you have fun

He likes to go swimming

And meet other fish

Its where they eat gherkins

Its his favourite dish

But most if the time

Its chocolate that he will eat

In his pretty lake

Listening to his favourite beat.

Our Sacred Heart

 - by Issy Corrigan

It’s hard to imagine a child that likes school,

But if they did that school must be cool,

That school was all about making kids smart,

That’s why we love our Sacred Heart.

But our school wasn’t just about education,

That’s why we think it was the best in the nation,

We shared to much laughter and so much fun,

It was like everyday was a day in the sun.

Our teachers were the best,

So let’s chuck out the rest,

We never want to leave,

In Sacred Heart we will always believe.

To our great school we thank you,

To the best school we love you,

To the only school we know we will miss you,

To our dear Sacred Heart please keep being you!

Our School

by Benji Simpson

The school i go to is sacred heart,

It’s located in Sandringham.

I started there when I was 5

And it’s been a total jam.

We have a new principal,

His name is Mr Collis

He’s made our school a better place

And hopefully he is proud of us.

I’m in 5/6 and we get very little rest

But I admit its honestly the best!

We play the sports we love

And every so often a math test to see if we are above

Next year I go to grade six

I’ll be the leader of the school

Then I move to secondary

And there will be a whole set of rules

The Wolves by James Bull

Liesl  is a girl who's life is a whirl,

The war hurt her bad so now she’s sad,

She finally found her mama but not yet summer

Otto is a boy who likes to play with his toy,

He hates Russians and doesn’t want concussions,

He is also and thinks he is great

Mia is small and thinks her mama is tall,

She rubs food in her hair for instance a pear,

She loves her family a lot and now eats food from a pot

They are wolves and don’t swim in pools,

They hint for food when always in the mood,

They stay in a pack and watch each other’s back

Sacred Heart Poem - by Rainer Melton

Sacred Heart the best school ever,

Take a chance it's now or never,

With friendships to build and lots to learn,

You’ll have so much fun in each term.

So now it’s time to put your thinking cap on,

Let’s hurry to class and move things along,

There’s subjects to learn, too much for one day,

Don’t worry too much, let's head out and play.

If sport is your thing then go grab a ball,

Let’s run the the court or even the hall,

If you’d rather play games then that okay too,

Go grab your friends or it can be just me and you.

The sky is getting dark it’s nearly time to head home,

Pack up your things don’t forget your phone,

Say goodbye to your friends don’t hang your head in sorrow,

It’s just for one night. I'll see you tomorrow.

Empathy and Gratitude

- by Lachie Gilmour

I am at SHPSS I am in grade five,

all of my classmates really dig in and strive. Through dedication we work as one,

our work is never done.

 We practise empathy and gratitude,

It’s great for our attitude.

Our youth students are known as foundations, They’ll rise and soon be the future generations. Our teachers guide and educate,

This knowledge we all lift our game and elevate.

Miss Moloney is so smooth,

She’s best at teaching the youth.

With her kind and gentle ways,

all the little preppies get their praise.

Inquiry - The Brain

We have tied up our Inquiry unit by the students doing a project on the brain and looking at some different conditions that might be brain related. The students have researched such things as;

depression

concussion

anxiety

dementia

OCD

epilepsy

We have been astounded by the students knowledge and interest in this area. They have learnt how different parts of the brain effect different conditions. This topic has been really interesting and one that has shown to be very beneficial for all of us.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

This week in respectful relationships we have been exploring different brain breaks in class and how they can be a fantastic tool to use when working with different subjects throughout the week.

The Neuroscience of Brain Breaks

For new information to become memory, it must pass through an emotional filter called the amygdala and then reach the prefrontal cortex. When students’ brains become anxious, highly confused, or overwhelmed, the activation of the amygdala surges until this filter becomes a stop sign. New learning no longer passes through to reach the prefrontal cortex and sustain memory. Even if students are not stressed by the pace or content of new learning, a point arises when the amygdala exceeds its capacity for efficient conduction of information through its networks into memory. Brain breaks can be planned to restore the emotional state needed to return the amygdala from overdrive into the optimal state for successful information flow.

Fitness Club

The implementation of Fitness Club this term has been a huge success. It has been happening every Tuesday, 1st half of lunch time, and is open to all Grade 5/6s. It has been great to see some regulars attending every week and a few new students giving it a try. The session is broken into a warm up, a specific skill or strength focus, a workout and occasionally an additional finisher. We don't keep score in Fitness Club, it is just an opportunity for students who are passionate about health and fitness to get with like minded students, push themselves in workouts and also get a better understanding of our body's energy systems and how they work. We hope to see even more students jump on board next term!

Captains Corner

This is what the 5/6s did in Term 2 of the year. At the start of the term we had camp at Camp Rumbug, we participated in many activities such as canoeing and archery. We stayed for 4 days and slept in comfy cabins. Also during this term we read a book called 'We are Wolves'. This book was about Germany after World War Two and 3 children surviving after the war’s damage. It was a great class read. In Maths we did an activity called rocket maths to improve our multiplication knowledge. We also learnt about graphs, fractions and decimals. Meanwhile in Inquiry, we were learning all about the brain and the different parts of it. We learnt about concussions and other brain diseases. The year 6’s participated in the sacrament of Confirmation, they had to choose a saint to guide them in their Catholic journey. Every Friday of this term we also had inter-school sports. There were 2 football teams and 3 netball teams that competed against many other schools. We also had lightning premierships which were round robins that teams played and had a great deal of fun. That’s about it for Term 2!

We look forward to a really exciting second half of the year and we thank you for your ongoing support,
