Prep,1 & 2 Classroom News

We have made it! Another successful term completed at Sacred Heart. The Junior team would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support this semester. From the chats on the yard at pick up times and the lovely emails and Seesaw messages; these small things really mean a lot to us. Thanks again to all our parent helpers, it makes such a difference to have you back into our rooms. Call in anytime, you are always welcome.

Prep News

Here is a snapshot of our assembly last week in case you missed it. The Preps did an amazing job learning their speaking parts off my heart and singing in front of the whole school. We are very proud of them and the wonderful learning they have been doing.

I/2 News

Multisensory Literacy

We have introduced a new spelling rule this week called the 'floss' rule. Students have enjoyed exploring this and finding words that follow the floss rule in their reading and writing.  Have a go at exploring this rule at home. Of course there are always exceptions to a rule, we discovered that the word 'bus' doesn't follow the rule and that's because the word bus was originally omnibus! We have all been learning something new as we follow the MSL approach.

Also a huge shout out to Mrs Stroud who has been helping and guiding us this semester. We really appreciate your assistance and guidance. No question is ever too silly for Mrs Stroud.

Writing

We have been exploring some poetry this week. Students participated in shared writing sessions and then in small groups to create their own. We have looked at shape, rhyme and Kenning poetry.  Kennings are like riddles. They describe something without ever saying what it is. Each line of the poem is made of a two-word phrase and are often joined by a hyphen.  We even use them in our everyday language. For example a tall building is called a 'skyscraper'.

Can you guess what this Kenning is about?

tail-wagger

face-licker

ball-catcher

house-guardian

furry-friend

cat-chaser

1/2's also enjoyed a poetry session with their 3/4 buddies who are also exploring poetry. What a great way to learn and teach each other. Thank you 3/4's.

 Mathematics

We have continued exploring the concept of Multiplication this week. Students are developing their ability to recognise that multiplication it is a quicker way to add and that it can be represented visually in different ways. We have looked closely at arrays this week. Using  the language of columns and rows, students made arrays and investigated what happens if we turn our arrays around. We discovered that although it now looks different there are still the same number of items.  We then used what we had learnt to design our own array city. I think you will agree, they did an awesome job.

Inquiry- Science

We were blown away with the effort that the 1/2's put into their science experiment which they showcased in front of their class last Wednesday. It looked like students really enjoyed completing this task at home with their parents and family. We're sure there were lots of interesting dinner table conversations. Here are just a few examples. Thank you for assisting your child! Parental involvement really does have a multitude of benefits which include developing students self-confidence and motivation in the classroom! And WOW were they motivated!
