Freezing and melting:

From our volcano experiment the children have been very interested in science experiments, Muhammad. S explained how to freeze items in a balloon and then melt them, so we tried our own freezing experience.

We froze a few containers with fish and pebbles inside and watched it melt, asking the children questions while watching and touching the ice.

The children notice it is hard, a solid I tell them.

Muhammad S – “We need a hammer to break it”

Muhammad A – “Can break with a big shoe.”

How does the ice feel on your hands

Benjamin – “Cold, that’s so cold.”

Muhammad A – “Feels slippery.”

Charbel –Holding his hands up and saying, “It is cold, freezing.”

Saleh comes over to see what we are all looking at. “What’s this? It looks like water.”

How do we make ice?

Bukhari – “freeze it”

Saleh – “We put it in the fridge.”

Tyreese – “In the fridge”

Rafael- “Its melting,” Why “Because the heater is on.”

Muhammad S - “The freezer is colder that the fridge.”

Then they realised that by adding water, the ice melts faster.

Rafael - “Put warm water on it.”

How does it become water?

Rafael- “melting”.

Through this experiment the children and educators discussed the difference between melting and freezing, describing what it looks like and what is occurring. Learning what a solid and liquid is.

 Prep

Thanks to all the prep parents for attending the Prep Museum last night. The students loved having their family members present and were so proud in showcasing their special items.

In Term 3, the Preps will be learning all about jobs. Some of the jobs will include emergency services, community workers, trades people and jobs at school.

Dress ups

As part of this exploration, each Friday the students will be encouraged to dress up. Below there is a timetable to say what to dress up as each week.

Dressing up is not compulsory and please do not go out and buy these costumes

We encourage students to make their own costumes with your help. This could be as simple as a badge or a hat or jacket that supports the theme.

If students do not have a costume, then they are to wear school uniform.

Please note: Students are to only dress up in costumes that support the weekly theme, it is not a free dress or fancy-dress day.

Guest Speakers (we need you)

As part of the exploration of jobs, we are also inviting family members into the classroom to talk about their jobs. This is a highly valuable experience for the students, and we are happy to support you with your talk (it can be as informal or formal as you like).

In the past we have had carpenters, psychologists, advocates, comedians, stay at home parents etc

If this interests you, please email the Prep teachers so we can see what time works.

Please make sure you have a Working with Children’s Check.

We have also locked in the dates for the last two Kinder excursions:

  • Kids on the Avenue, 15th July at 10am
  • Moreland Community Child Care Co-op (Mitchell st) 22nd July 10am

We would like to ask for your assistance to help these excursions run smoothly, by having at least two volunteers to walk with us to and from the kindergartens. You will of course need to have a current Working with Children’s Check and have attended the Information session about volunteering at school. Please contact Abbie through Compass if you can volunteer.

Thanks for a great term and we will see you in Term 3! The Prep Team

Grade 1

In Integrated Studies, the Grade 1’s have been working hard to finish their dioramas. Firstly, the students used plasticine to create a minibeast of their choice. They then used other craft materials to create a habitat for their minibeast and show it in their box. We have included some examples of the dioramas to share with you here.

The Grade 1’s also enjoyed our Wellbeing Day activities this week. We discussed what wellbeing means and the different strategies we can use to support our physical, mental and social wellbeing. The Grade 1’s wrote a gratitude letter to a special person of their choice and created a leaf to show their character strength. We also made stress balls using rice and balloons! The students loved our outdoor mindfulness activity, where we spent a few moments practising mindful listening and then went on a ‘5 Senses Scavenger Hunt’ around the playground.

As the term comes to an end, the Grade 1 team would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday! We hope you have a well deserved break and we look forward to starting lots more exciting learning next term.

Grade 2

Whilst Semester One is about to end, we have lots of amazing and positive reflections to celebrate.

In the Year 2 Learning Area,

we learnt, planned, designed, researched, sang, danced, played and had so much exciting fun with our minibeasts investigations.

Yes, you’ve got it! It was the best buzzing study in the land!

This week we celebrated the end of Term 2.

We:

  • dressed casually on Tuesday and engaged in different wellbeing and mindfulness activities, from making stress balls to brilliant shiny minibeasts.
  • had our community picnic in our Year 2 area with our friends, parents, grandparents, carers, and teachers.
  • celebrated our achievements with our parents and carers during our Wednesday’s reporting conferences.
  • enthusiastically presented our minibeast reports and models to our class (stay tuned for our photos in the next newsletter)!
  • made Friday a fun last day of term, as we Congratulated everyone for making our first Semester so fabulous!

Happy and safe holidays to all!
