Acting Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

It's hard to believe that this is the last week of Term Two. In today's newsletter I would like to acknowledge the many achievements and learning opportunities that we have experienced this term, amidst all the COVID, FLU, staff shortages that have challenged us. However, how lucky are our students that they are in a vibrant learning environment, where they have lots of opportunities for learning, celebrating and sharing.

Peter Khalil:

On Monday I arranged for Hana and I to meet with the Labor MP, Peter Khalil. I spoke to him about the upgrades we felt Moreland PS required and how he could support our school access funding from both the state and federal government.  Our main concerns were around:

  1. The cost of maintenance (eg. new windows, exterior building so it has kerb appeal etc)
  2. Helping support our vision for our upcoming Library Resource centre/Community Hub
  3. Assisting with funding the rebranding of our school, if Moreland council and DET decide we need to change our school’s name. This is a decision that the Department of Education has control over.

Peter Khalil was very supportive, and we will liaise with him to see if we can gain some funds for our school.  I’m in the process of working with a program manager who will give us a costing scope of works, that we will be able to use moving forward, when applying for grants or seeking money.

It was great to see Peter also interacting with the grade 5/6 students about their Project Based Learning around ‘The Island of Cennet.’Our school politicians have been working on a lot of things, including an election to see who would be ruling overall. Peter also read their constitution that included most of the main rules and responsibilities that would be in force in Cennet.

Parent-teacher Interviews/ Student-led Conferences:

It was lovely to see lots of families on Wednesday come and meet with their child’s classroom teacher.  It’s a great opportunity to have conversations around what children are doing well, and also what they can also do to continue to challenge themselves and improve their learning.

Prep Museum:

On Thursday we had lots of families come in and look at the wonderful work children in prep classes have been doing. I know the children felt very proud to have families come into their classroom and share their great learning experiences.

Holiday works:

Over the school holidays, the entire prep area and classrooms will be painted. We have also arranged for new carpet to be installed in some of those rooms; this will occur during Term 3, as the carpenters are not free during the holidays, as we had hoped.  Blinds are also being installed in some of the classes during the holidays.

To the whole of the community of Moreland PS: Thank you for entrusting your precious children to us. I want to reassure you that all the teachers are here for you and our families. If we do not get it right and you have questions, please do not hesitate in contacting your child’s teacher, Hana Dennaoui (Assistant Principal), or myself. We work as a collaborative team and we are here to ensure we work together for the best of your child.

Have a lovely break, keep safe and warm.

Premier's Reading Challenge

Well done to the students who have been recording their books in their Premier’s Reading Challenge accounts. Together, Moreland Primary students have already read over 400 books! Thank you to the students who are writing reviews of the books they read, as this is useful for other students when selecting a new book to read. A big congratulations to Hume (2C), Genevieve (3/4A) and Guyegbat (5/6C) who have already completed the Challenge! We encourage all our students to keep reading so that they can receive their certificate – you have 95 days left!

Comics Club

Thanks to all the students that attended Comics Club! It has been wonderful to see everyone's comic creations. Next term, I will be running Paper Crafts Club instead. Hope everyone has a restful term break!
