Dissection Discoveries

One of the interesting and exciting activities that Year 7 Science students get to experience when they study 'classification of the living world', is to dissect a squid and explore its anatomy.

Students looked at the structural features of a squid and how it has perfectly adapted to it's environment. During the dissection students located the squid's reproductive organs and decided if it was male or female, they then found out that squid have three hearts and that their blood is copper-based and is therefore green in colour. They also looked at the beak of the squid and how it works to crush the shells of crabs, with one student even finding their squid still had a small starfish in its beak. The class were very hands-on and thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the squid's anatomy.
