Cows Create Careers

Celebration of Learning

On Wednesday, Year 3-6 students attended the Cows Create Careers Online Presentation Day. We were joined by the participating students from Balmoral K-12 Community College, Victoria Harbour Primary School, Hawkesdale Secondary College, Lowanna College, Goroke P-12 College, Apsley Primary School, Pakenham Consolidated School, Noorat Primary School and Drouin Secondary College. We participated in lots of fun games and engaging activities. There were prizes and competitions and it was a very exciting experience. Throughout the CCC program, the students worked extremely hard so this was a great chance to celebrate the learning that has taken place.

Fletcher and Talia were recognised for their hard work on this project and received an award for being the 'Cavendish Primary School Winning School Team'. They are very deserving of this award. Their passion for this program was evident from the very first session and their work ethic reflected this. They worked industriously during class time each week; even putting in extra time at home after school. Fletcher and Talia should be really proud of this achievement.

It was fantastic to have the Year 3-6 students involved in this program. While the content of this program revolved around the dairy industry, it was presented in a way in which students could continue to build on their Literacy and Numeracy skills while taking part. Students developed their note taking and research skills, extended their comprehension skills, applied problem solving strategies and used mathematics in everyday scenarios.

As many of our students come from farms themselves, it was great to see farm safety included as a topic in this program. As a group, we had in-depth discussions about a range of topics including: quad bikes, motorbikes, helmets, children on farms, animals, machinery, chemicals, dams and water safety. A big part of the safety topic was understanding that for children who grow up on farms, their home is essentially a work place and sometimes the line that divides these can be blurred. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect, recognise and discuss the risks that can be present on the farm. Students learnt that these risks don't need to be eliminated or avoided entirely, but how important it is to manage and minimise these risks.

We would like to say a big thank you to John Hutchinson and Deanne Kennedy, the program coordinators, for supporting our involvement in this program. They generously provided us with the prizes and resources for the Celebration Session, as well as a delicious lunch for all students to enjoy. Thank you to the Bridge Cafe for preparing our wonderful lunch.
