Science Term 2 Round Up

Term 2 has been a busy time for the Science faculty with exciting experiences to be had by all.

Our year 7 classes have been studying Space including the Moon and Mars and were fortunate to have RoboGals from Melbourne University come out to explain how important engineering and technology was in this field. The students also had hands-on experience with coding and robotics through simulations of rovers on Mars. Students across year 7 and 8 have begun an introduction to programming in Python and will soon be able to amuse themselves by writing simple computer games.

Our year 8 students were investigating Body Systems this term and were busy learning to be mini doctors. The Concept class joined the GTAC Biomimicry Innovators Club to explore biomechanics and design a prosthesis to meet the needs of an amputee. This program took place over two days, the first “in house” with the students attempting the task with rudimentary tools and materials under the instruction of an industry expert via video conference

The second day will see students visiting the Gene Technology Access Centre where 8C students will explore the anatomy and biomechanics of their own arm to design a prosthesis that meets the needs of individuals living with a disability.

Year 9 students have been investigating chemical reactions and learning basic chemistry through the use of titrations experiments.  Our Concept Year 9 class also recently participated in the Big Science Competition (results to be confirmed) and they completed the Education Perfect "Sustainable Oceans" class competition. Some excellent results were awarded to Emily Rodda, David Huang, Mirani Simons-Moemai, Liam Maslin, and Tyson Truong, all achieving the Gold award for the most correctly answered questions.
