Vaping and e-Cigarettes

AN ALARMING GROWING TREND – YOU NEED TO KNOW THE FACTS

Over recent times, there has been a growing concern about the impending epidemic affecting young people in relation to the use of e-cigarettes and the trendy pastime of vaping. As this activity grows in popularity, most teenagers and adults are unaware of the associated risks and the potential impact vaping can have on their development and overall health.

Many teenagers are succumbing to peer pressure around this risk-taking activity due to the ease of accessing and hiding vapes. They are often cheaper than conventional cigarettes, making it more cost-effective and attractive to young people. Although it is illegal to purchase any type of e-cigarette or vaping product in Australia without a prescription, teenagers are finding ways to access them online. Australia has strict regulations in place for nicotine-containing products, and attempts are being made to regulate vaping and ban the importation of them.

There are many reasons why we take such a strong stance on Vaping at Nazareth, but the most concerning aspects are the health risks of breathing in unknown chemicals and the addictive nature of vaping due to the nicotine found in all vaping products. Vaping on School Grounds is illegal.

Many of the flavoured liquids associated with vaping, contain not only high levels of nicotine, but other potentially harmful additives. Many of these 'e-liquids' contain chemicals that are likely to be toxic, that when inhaled or vaped repeatedly, can cause severe damage to the lungs. Vaping is often marketed as being the 'healthy' alternative to smoking, and cleverly marketed to entice teens. However, doctors strongly advise that if you do not smoke, then you should not start vaping. Most teenagers are unaware of the associated risks and potential impact vaping can have on their development and overall health. Parents are encouraged to discuss the dangers of nicotine addiction and include e-cigarettes in the discussion alongside alcohol and drugs.

It is important to be aware of the facts surrounding all vaping products, as teenagers often assume that the flavoured ones are as safe as breathing in air. There are chemicals in all vaping products which can cause long term and permanent damage.

As time goes on we are finding out more about e-cigarettes. Recent research findings are providing frightening data on the types of chemicals found in e-cigarettes, and the number of young people taking up Vaping and becoming addicted.
