 Communication with your Child

As the school holidays approach it's a timely reminder to continue the wonderful conversations with your family. I know that on occasion our kids don't want to respond to our questions about how they are feeling, how their day was, what did they do at school and do they need any support etc.  I get it - they have been around other people all day and probably want some alone, down time however as parents/carers we really care about how their day was and want to know - at least something.  What I have learnt over the years is that if we keep asking the same questions - we will continue to get the same answers.

Some alternative questions to ask include:

 On Friendships:

  1. Who made you laugh today?
  2. Who did you play with?
  3. Is there someone you want to be friends with but aren't yet?

On Feelings:

  1. Did anything make you feel happy today?
  2. Did anything make you feel sad today?
  3. Tell me about one thing you did today that made you feel proud (and why)

On Learning:

  1. Can you teach me something from school?
  2. Tell me about a story you  read or listened to?
  3. Tell me something you know today that you didn't know yesterday?

Classroom Dynamics:

  1. What games do you play at break times?
  2. What are you most looking forward to tomorrow?
  3. Did you see anybody being kind?
