Debating

Training for the Comp

Shepparton High School is participating and hosting the Debaters Association of Victoria’s (DAV) 2016 regional competition.  On Thursday 25th August Numurkah Secondary College, St Mary of the Angels Secondary College and McGuire College joined Shepparton High School students in training for the debating competition to be held on Thursday 8th August, 2016.

The competition is the largest English-language debating competition in the world.  The Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) has the mission of ‘facilitating effective debate in Victoria.’  It was established in the 1920s, and has a long tradition of debating excellence.

The program is designed to provide training in the basic skills and structure of debating whilst also giving students exposure to the art of persuasion. Students learnt how to formulate arguments, how to define topics, and the role of each speaker in a debate.

Why Debate?

Debating is an invaluable skill for students:

*it promotes confidence and effective public presentation.

*it encourages logical and critical thinking, social awareness and an interest in current affairs.

*it is multi-disciplinary: debating techniques can be used in all subject areas.

*its benefits extend through all aspects of the school curriculum.
