PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS & REPORTING - Term 3

SPA reports were recently uploaded to Xuno. We encourage students and parents to study the results in each category for each subject and consider how well they have gone and how they might be able to improve as the semester progresses.

The SPA report encourages discussion not just between parents and students but also between students and their teachers. The SPA reports, in addition to the Learning Goals developed and discussed at the First Day Student Conferences earlier in the year and during Teacher Advisor sessions, will form an excellent talking point for our Parent/Teacher interviews at the end of this term.

These Parent/Teacher Interviews are being held this term on: Thursday 15th September – 4.00 to 7.00pm and Friday 16th September – 10.00am to 1.00pm

Interviews will be conducted in the Personal Learning Centre, Senior Study Centre and the Science Centre. Teacher Advisors, Support Staff, Classroom Teachers and Year Level Team Leaders would love to see as many parents and students in attendance as possible.

Interview times will be booked using an online booking system on Xuno similar to the one used at the beginning of the year for the first day student conferences and term 1 Parent/Teacher interviews.

Parents can still see teachers without bookings however families with pre-booked interviews will have priority. The online booking system will be open on Friday 2nd September.

SUBJECT SELECTIONS

The second half of this term has seen students from Years 7 to 11 select their preferred subjects for 2017. It has been an enormous task that has included a number of parent information sessions, Year Level Meetings, subject expos and individual counselling sessions, to ensure that students are thoroughly informed about their subjects and that they have chosen courses that best suit their pathways and interest. I would like to thank all the parents who attended the information sessions and also thank the Year Level Team Leaders and all the other staff that assisted with this process.

Deadline for selections for current Year 9, 10 and 11 students was Friday 26th August. If your child has been away or not handed the subject selection form in please hand into the office asap.

The final phase of this process was completed on Friday 2nd September

Period 1&2  Year 8 into 9 Subject Expo

Period 3&4  Year 7 into 8 Subject Expo

WORK EXPERIENCE WEEK

The last week of term three has been set aside for work experience for Year 10. All students must undertake a work placement during the week September 12th -16th .

Parents are asked to follow this up with their son/daughter to ensure they are making the necessary arrangements. Some students have already organised their placement for the week with the assistance of their parents or Mary-Ann Linehan.

Any student who is struggling to find a work placement should be discussing a possible placement with their Industry and Enterprise teacher or Mary-Ann as soon as possible.

The placement can be anywhere in Victoria as long as the correct forms are completed and signed. Year 10 classes will still be scheduled for students that have completed their work experience or for students unable to organise a placement during this scheduled week.

A LIFETIME COST

We meet young people quite often who want to leave school, drop out of high school before the end of year 10 for example. What they don’t realise is that there is a choice which is either pay now and play later or play now and pay later.

At the point where they are thinking of leaving school the option of earning a wage, even a low one, is very attractive as they will have money in their pocket – but how much money? And what will be the longer term cost of this early departure?

Earning $8 - $10 per hour won’t be enough as you grow older and have higher demands and expectations. Just think how much more they would earn if they finished high school or finished college/university/Tafe.

The Bureau of Labour Statistics calculated the hourly rate of the different groups. They are:

Average high school drop out earns $10.22 per hour.

Average high school graduate earns $14.50 per hour.

Average after a four year college degree = $23.42 per hour.

Those figures are impressive and might be motivation enough to encourage your child to continue in their education – however if you consider the lifetime costs they become very significant.

The high school dropout earns $850,720 in their life; the high school graduate $1,212,640 and the 4 year degree person earns $1,948,960.

So remind or inform them that if they drop out of school they are making a $1 million decision, because that is the loss of earnings they will suffer over their lifetime.

Now that figure would motivate me!
